I'm just finishing up my fowler. I might build a rifle next winter, and if I do, it'll probably be an SMR because of the set triggers.

My fowler was delivered nicely by the USPS. She's hard to look at. :cool:

What distance was that from? I'm putting together a 16 gauge Kibler and wasn't planning on shooting round balls... but now you've got me thinking.

Can one kill something? Perhaps, but the ethics of wounding loss need to be considered.

I suppose that's true at first face–but very few fawns make it to adulthood. For a population to remain stable, a doe only needs to produce two fawns in her lifetime. Six-bits says your local deer population is at its max. Harvest a doe.

My Kibler is still a gcode file in Jim's CNCs–so I have never owned a flinter. But I have several cappers that I've owned for the last fifty years and have "shot out" a few uncharged balls. I assume the ball isn't sitting on the breach. It doesn't take much power to blow one out.

My first BP rifle was a Zouve. I'm talking 1971–right out of highschool. I bought a couple of different Minié ball moulds and it really didn't like 'em. I finally tried a patched round ball, and it shot well. I killed a few muleys with it before I traded it off for another side-cocker.

I've got a fowler kit ordered. I'm going to use it for grouse. I've got a couple of rifled side-cockers I use for big game.

I had that rifle tested in Ashland and it's a fer piece from the middle of Idaho. ;)

So... think of it this way: Could you hit a turn signal on a vehicle coming at you at 35 miles an hour on a bouncy road? That's what you'd have to accomplish. Anybody can hit a bear with a cloud of orange fog. And by the way, grizzlies rarely eat people.

Good grief. I'm a retired game warden. I once sent a Browning (new model) BAR off to a lab, and the analyst called and said he wasn't sure the rifle was safe to fire. "Why not?" "Because of the broken stock." It was in like-new condition when I UPS'd it, and the only way it was broken was...

Well... I don't expect to run into one at a garage sale, but I have a 16-gauge fowler on order. It'll be my grouse gun. Perhaps a turkey, but just a bird gun.
