    Help with Hawken Identification.

Agreed. I've only had it once and am still working on dialing in the accuracy, but im very pleased with it. I intend on using it to hunt elk up here and I think she'll do just fine for that. For the price I paid I don't think I could have gotten a better deal.

    Help with Hawken Identification.

So I've finally had a moment to get the lock off. It is marked L&R on the inner lock plate. Don't know that it's much to go off of as there seem to be a number of places online where you purchase L&R locks. I'm also curious about the rear buckhorn sight. In all my research I've yet to come...

    Help with Hawken Identification.

Under the barrel rib is another location i haven't checked as I haven't yet gotten the screws to loosen and don't want to strip them. When I'm able to free it I'll look under there too. The snail on the breech does look very similar, but it also looks like your breech plug is larger than barrel...

I'll have to give that a shot.

That's pretty much spot on the look I'd be aiming for.

    Help with Hawken Identification.

To everyone who has posted and offered suggestions in this thread thus far thank you. It may be a Sharon kit and so far that's what it seems the evidence points to but the absence of any Sharon markings is curious to me. I did check under the barrel tennons as @BoomStick mentioned but saw no...

More pictures showing the absence of any markings on the enterior of the stock and the underside of the barrel.

    Help with Hawken Identification.

Alright. So I have examined the rifle and it does appear to have the extended toe on the butt plate as well as the single piece lower entry pipe mentioned in the article which @BoomStick linked. @Grenadier1758 I have yet to examine the inside of the lock plate but that will be my next step...

    Help with Hawken Identification.

Wow! What a cool read! Thanks for that link. It does seem i might have one of those kits. Going to look at the breech plug snail, lower entry pipe, and heel/toe difference on the butt stock when I get home. Everything in that article seems to match what I have but I'll double check to be sure...

    Help with Hawken Identification.

It is indeed a hooked breech but there are no markings on the underside of the barrel hidden by the stock (I'll post pictures of that area after I'm home from work). From my research I am guessing a 70s to 90s time frame as well. Was Sharon a builder? I'm not familiar with the name.

    Help with Hawken Identification.

The gun club I bought it from buys and sells all sorts of firearms for its members and is set up as a kind of used gun store inside a collectibles and antiques store. I didn't buy it directly from a member but from the club itself. I may be able to ask who sold the rifle to the club and get in...

    Help with Hawken Identification.

Greetings all, recently I acquired a .54 Hawken from a local gun club I'm a member of. I'm loving the piece and she shoots beautifully, but im having difficulty properly identifying who may have built the rifle as well as where and when. It is not an Italian reproduction I'd don't believe, but i...

    Traditional Hunting Gear

It is. I used to do some reenacting and while back but have been out if it for a while. Now getting back into not only that but actually shooting and hunting with muzzleloaders as well. Excited to dig into this stuff further.

Cool thanks. Pretty new here so I'm still figuring out where everything in the forums can be found.

Thanks! I'll definitely look into these resources. While I have mid 1800's in mind I don't think early 1800's or late 1700's would be out of the question. Correct me if I'm wrong but I feel like these sorts of things would have been used for generations.
