Advice on cutting Tent & Tipi Poles

I've cut two sets of tipi poles . Both time I cut lodgepole pine , in the month of May when the sap was running . The bark peels off easy . I dried the poles in the shade out of the sun , there were some drying splits but not many . A friend of mine liked to use douglas fir they looked a tad...

    Teepee vs Wall tent

I've had an 18' tipi and a 16' x 16' Army tent with the very heavy canvas . The tipi is definitely harder to heat with an open fire , you can use an ozan and a stove but then you are basically making a wall tent out of it. I set up both by myself . The wall tent must have weight around 180...

:hmm: Good question . Haven't heard anything bad about it so far

    1:34 in .54 cal

I was looking at the Pedersoli Frontier Flint Carbine in .54 cal and noticed it has a 1:34 twist . Just wondered if it shoots round ball ok for hunting , so shots would be under 100 yards , more likely around 50 yards . Just wondered if anyone has shot this gun with that twist ? Also wonder if...

    Cocking Hammer noisy trigger

yeah the finger behind the trigger works .... if you remember :hmm: , I haven't had a look at the trigger mechanism, I'd consider a trigger upgrade if it is bascially a drop in replacement . Is there such available ? Did T/C use the same trigger on all their muzzleloaders from the 1990's?

    Cocking Hammer noisy trigger

I picked up a nice T/C Pennsylvania Hunter. Was wondering how to quiet down the trigger mechanism . When I cock the hammer back the trigger makes a noticeable rattle at half and full cock , not a tight snick sound.

    What is the movie name

I thought this movie was more realistic overall than Jeremiah Johnson , not as exciting but more believeable. The camera work was very good. Here is a link to a short clip from the movie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYnzEpSFxzo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYnzEpSFxzo

    Scalped

I met an old timer when I was a boy who said he met someone who had been scalped which caused his face to droop down ... someone should have stapled it in place !

    Barrel Length ?

Just was wondering if anyone knows how short a smoothbore barrel can be and still be effective ? I see some rifled flintlock barrels down to 24" in calibers up to .54 was wondering if a smoothbore needs a longer barrel to effectively burn the powder .

Canvas preservative , non toxic ?

For sure it must be dry before storage and basements are not the best place either. I should have specified the concern was for mildew forming while the tent was set up ... it stays damp basically from Nov to April around here.

Canvas preservative , non toxic ?

Here on Vancouver Island moss grows on rolling stones! Untreated canvas lasts about as long as standing old growth timber. Guess I will just accept having to replace it when necessary

Canvas preservative , non toxic ?

Just wondering if there exists such a thing as a non-toxic or less toxic canvas preservative than modern stuff? Seems like if it is toxic to living things then it would be toxic to humans as well. Was wondering about plain old turpentine ? Not waterproof but I'm mainly looking at preventing...

    What size Tipis?

I have found quite a few tipi rings above coulees as well this was along the South Saskatchewan river and the 40 mile coulee . Most of them have been rather small 12 ft or even a bit less. Remember that until the coming of the horse Indians used dogs to help drag their belongings on a travois so...

    What size Tipis?

A 14' is on the small size but good for shorter camps , I'd pick a 16' for 2 people more headroom and space for walking around the fire. Not any more difficult to pitch solo.

    gpr 54. cal

Does anyone know the person or people behind designing the Lyman GP ? For such a popular gun it would be good to know how it came about.

    Tipi help........

Thanks for the advice. I'm in BC and it is damp for extended periods of time so it seems the extra $ is worth it. Just out of curiosity does anyone know what the Sunforger treatment is ?
