.018 Fabric For Shooting Patches

Let us know. It might be a good alternative to #40.

Given the part number ended in 40,(before the dash) I was thinking maybe it was "the 40", IDK.

No stripes in the #40 and the bolt is labeled #40. I have a hard time physically finding it in my local store. Never seems to be in the same place. Usually the ladies working there have no idea so I just have to search it out. Last trip I bought a pretty big chunk so I'm set for a while.

The drill was always located with the utility fabrics, which may or may not have included the tickings or canvas or denim for that matter. Drill was always with the utility cloth such as muslin or osnaburg. Now I can't find it anywhere. Good thing I bought a lot some time ago.

Measuring in the store can be misleading due to the use of sizing to enhance the feel of the fabric. Washing in hot water will shrink the fabric slightly and drying will fluff the fabric a bit so the slip reading will be thicker after washing and drying and the compressed measurement will be thinner. You have to feel the fabric, look at the tightness of weave through the fabric in a strong light as you assess the measurement in the store. That's one of the reasons we can get acceptable performance using a wide variation of material thickness and tightness of weave. We have to be more [particular when we look for fabrics that can be used for X ring accuracy.

I live in northeast, Ohio and I'm about ten miles from Joann's headquarters and store. Its better to call them and order than order online. I ordered #40 drill from them, they didn't have at that store but they looked it up and gave me the number of another store that had it in stock I called and placed the order no problem.

I had to bring the wife shopping today and as fate would have it, she wanted to stop by Joann's fabric. I figured what the hell, might as well go in rather than sit out in the 30 deg weather. Fortunately, I had an old micrometer in the Subie's toolbox....Of the 6 bolts of pillow/matrass ticking they had on hand, one was red and the other five were blue. All had different part numbers and thicknesses varied by a couple of thousandths from 0.012 for the red, to 0.015 +/- o.oo1 for the blues. The thickest (0.018" as measured) was blue stuff that actually felt considerably stiffer and thicker than the rest.
( Made in India if memory serves.) The woman at the cutting counter said that this one particular ticking was the most popular due to it's heaviness and durability. The part number of that one is 16840183 and is priced at $10/yd. I ended up buying another yard and a half just because it seemed to leave a 1500+ patch's on the shelf for the price of a whopper lunch at Burger King. I have no idea if it can be ordered but the part number is on the attached receipt for those who follow.. Now you guys have me thinking if I should go back and buy it all...

Newbie question here: If I were to purchase what’s seems to be good patch material from the fabric store, does it need to be washed first before cutting the patches? I saw some mention of the sizing used in the material to stiffen it?

I'm kinda surprised at the demand for 0.018"- I have always bought pre-cut patches in the past, when they and all BP stuff were more available locally, and only for my TC Hawken rifles, one of which likes 0.,015" and the other liked 0.010" in what ever brand of precut and/or pre-lubed patches that were available wherever I was at time of purchase. I was at a shoot a few times and saw guys cutting patches at the muzzle as they loaded from strips of ticking, so the next time I saw ticking for sale I bought a chunk, turns out it was too thick for my use. This thread makes me want to go looking again for ticking material, as some that you mentioned as being too thin might just work in my guns.
