Yup.
You can pinch the caps, and then make sure they're well seated with a bit of antler or bone, but the right sized nipples will be miles better.
I tried pinching but didn’t like the results Took my rifle to Old South Firearms in Argo AL. The fixed me up, now no worries with ill fitting caps.
Not sure what Cones work. I got the Slix Springs cones and those were no better than the existing on 3 other guns.
What did improve the problem was getting RWS 1075 Caps. Regardless of size designation, those fit.

Weird. I've got At least 7 sets of Slix Springs nipples spread out between pietta/uberti 1858's, walkers, pockets, 1860's & 1851's. They all work perfectly with CCI #11 caps.
Track of the wolf nipples also fit #11 caps well.
I don't have any regular RWS 1075's, but I have a ton of 1075+. They fit well on #11 nipples, but the copper is thinner, and the extra primer compound makes them explode. End up with mangled pieces jamming stuff up.
Need to get some regular 1075's to try.
I don't know where some of you guys get the idea that there are #10 and #11 nipples. There are various makers of after market nipples and then there are the nipples installed by the manufacturers who produce the replica firearms of the 1800's. The ROA is in a class by itself. What there IS are various dimensions of percussion caps produced by three major manufacturers of percussion caps and I believe there is an Italian producer also, don't hear much about them anymore. The caps normally used here in the US are Remington's, CCI, and German RWS 1075's. All three of those outfits produce caps that differ internally and externally.
Remington #10's differ than CCI #10's. Remington #11's differ than CCI #11's........... RWS 1075's are similar to CCI #11's............. Rem 10's, CCI 11's, and RWS1075's are the best for a high 90 some percent of what after market and original nipples found on replica revolvers with most of the opinion (and mine) that Remington #10's are best overall. A few small caliber firearms will take CCI #10's which are the smallest initially available cap, they don't fit well on most larger revolvers and nipples. If readers of this forum who are new to the game would do a search, there are threads and threads speaking of this.
I'd suggest you go to the 'Shooting Accessories' section of this forum and check out a thread titled 'CCI Caps', read esp the #2 post. It deals with what you are asking and read a few other ones, there is a informative chart giving the internal and external info on caps available. One of the rules of percussion shooting......... 'Match your caps to the nipples you have, don't try and match nipples to caps. In case OP you are talking about caps and nipples for a percussion shotgun or rifle, the same idea and rules apply. CC

That only works if you can get whatever caps you want. Remington #10's are so rare I haven't been able to buy any in the last 4 years. Swapping to different nipples has kind of become a necessity.

I had that issue with my .32 crockett rifle. The nipple that came with the gun was too small for #11 caps so I promptly changed to a proper fitting nipple.

These folks make nipples specifically for cci #11 caps.
a friend purchased a used 50 caliber percussion and it came with a bunch of stuff. He didn't know much about shooting muzzleloaders so I took him out and I discovered that his #11 CCI caps wouldn't shoot on the 1st hammering, he would have to do them twice, and i's sure that's because they weren't seating all the way down. Had some CCI magnum caps, and i said here try these and don't you know they worked every time. I didn't experiment with his gun or do any measuring but apparently conventional caps were just too tight.
Yes they do, as does SlixShot say the same thing. The truth is Rem 10 and CCI 11 have almost the same internal dimension's, the difference is that the Rem 10's have a longer skirt that fits down over the nipple better giving it an even tighter fit and from what alot has been written and I've noticed over the years a better ability to stay put on the nipple after firing and not fall into the innards of the revolver or jam thing s up around the hammer or get caught between the cylinder and recoil shield. The OP's suggestion that manufacturers make #10 and #11 nipples is false, they DO make nipples to fit for the most part Rem #10 and CCI #11 percussion caps. This same principle works for percussion single shot pistols, shotguns, and rifles. If ya have to go out and buy nipples to fit what caps you have available so be it, but then you may run into situations where the nipple isn't long enough and/or the thread is wrong.
