I accidnetally wound up with 1,000 #10 caps. If I size a nipple down(chuck in a drill press, threads up, apply file to side, checking often) will they work for plinking loads in my .50 Hawken? Say, 50 grs 3f Goex/PRB?

Both sizes are the same except for diameter. The #10 size generally fits pistol and revolver nipples better than the #11's. IF you don't want to change the size of the current nipple you can buy a pistol nipple withthe same thread size. Good luck.

10-4. I've got a small sack full of nipples, so I may just size one or two down, as long as the caps have enough spark to ignite a charge.

The caps are not weaker because they ignite pistols. They can be used for both pistols and rifles. You do need a nipple designed for a #10 cap, which you can make by filing down the one you have, or buying a new nipple.
