I am making project progress after a good weekend on the lathe for my matchlock

I am however wondering what would be the best way to take down the sides of the barrel flat as was occasionally done on these side of barrels on early matchlocks such as this

I was thinking of a file so I do not ruin the temper but if there is a faster way (besides a mill) let me know

Show us the whole barrel, not just the muzzle please

More details are needed. Is your barrel brass or is it just the lighting? The shape seems a bit unusual, but it could just be the angle. You really shouldn't have to worry about removing sny temper as your material shouldn't be heat treated. You could be concerned with removing stress from your material which can cause warpage. A file would work fine, a mill would be my choice though.
