these look similar to a fusil de chase,at least in handling qualities.were they in service in north america and how long? would any be in civilian hands as old surplus? any thought on this?

A very good overview is here: http://www.militaryheritage.com/musket5.htm and http://www.militaryheritage.com/musket8.htm

That squares with what I've read elsewhere. The only reference I have to use by French troops in N.America is that one of the Swiss regiments in garrison at Louisbourg was issued with them. That was disappointing news to me, I like the look of the Fusil 1717. Chances of them being in civilian hands seem pretty slim, however one can't rule out such anomalies entirely.

The 1717 in museums today came by the time of the American revolution , old gun from the french
warehouses , sold by Beaumarchais ( who never got paid)

How about the 1690 ?

ive been studying the french in the mississippi valley, on what little i can find. maybe they were used there but i dont know yet.

What impression are you thinking about in the Mississippi Valley and what time period. That will determine the appropriate gun.The 1717 would not have been used in that part of New France.I agree that some would have been issued in Louisbourg during the Seven Year's War but I don't know of any others.A few parts from this model have been found in America but probably mostly in New England. We need to know what and when you will be portraying.

1720-60, mid to upper valley. trapper/trader based out of kaskaskia or prarie du chien.the illinois country is interesting in that it was assigned to lousiana but the border between canada was never in stone. and canada wanted the trade as well. read something about french (bushrangers)that moved between the two and were accused of supplying the sac and fox with guns.
