I believe the earlier blueing was fire/charcoal blueing, I suspect that other methods came into use later (post 1800?) but do not have any data with dates and methods from the later periods,we can now brown or blue with the same materials by altering the process I suspect the same was may have been done then, someone else may have some info on post Rev War blueing methods other than charcoal.
