Here is a description I left on the Colt Forum. I received no replies but I think that the emphasis on that forum is post 1900's firearms. Great forum though.

Hello,

I have acquired a colt model 1849. This one is a six shot model with 4 inch barrel. It is nickeled. It is about 90% on the finish. The trigger guard and back strap are not magnetic so I am assuming it is silver plated brass. It has most of the silver finish on it. All the numbers match except the loading lever which has the last four numbers of 1372 instead of 1172 of the required 4 number for this serial range of '49 Colt Pocket. This is rather odd The cylinder has the matching serial number but no box around it and there is no patent wording above it. The number is faint but definitely readable. There is absolutely no scene on this one and appears to never have had one. The wedge is also matching as is the arbor. I can't read the ink number in the back strap channel well enough to be sure the grips are original. The barrel address is a Hartford one and features the SAM L Colt 2 line version. The action is tight, the nipples are excellent. The bore is dark. I would appreciate some advice as how to clean it. The grips have some dents on the bottom but are nice. Thanks for guesstimate of it's value. Oh, I know it's date of manufacture to be 1862. A gentleman told me that he didn't think Colt nickeled revolvers this early. He didn't see any pics of this Colt. Perhaps one of you folks may have info on when Colt started using the nickeling process on their firearms. Another old timer Colt collector thinks the edges are too sharp and the lettering too clear for it not to be original nickeling done when the metal was in the white. He had this one in his hands. I just want a consensus on this issue of the finish as it seems to be rare to find this civil war era Colt to have a nickel finish. I have ordered Shumakers book on Colt's Model 1849 called "Colt's Variations of the Old Model Pocket Pistol 1848 to 1872" but it will take a couple of weeks to get here.

If anyone is interested in seeing photos please ask. Perhaps you will tell me how to upload pictures as this site is different then the Colt Forum site.

Thanks in advance to one and all,

Meindert

Welcome to the forum. :)

As you probably know "Flaydermans Guide" does not mention nickle plated 1849's or that model without the roll engraved cylinder.

He does say that much of the value is based on the features each gun has and that there are over 200 variations.
The 9th edition of his book gives a "Good" value that ranges from $475 to $6000 and a "Fine" value that ranges from $1150 to $20,000.

Hello Sir!!

Thank you for your reply. I am a little lost on this site as to how to upload pictures. Even if and when I figure this out, I see that I can't edit my original post anymore to add pics to it. How do I add pics without starting a duplicate post? I paid for a premium subscription today. Normally I would access the pics on my computer and load them on my post on all the other sites I'm on but all I get is a URL request and I don't know how to link up to the photos on photobucket that I have of this revolver either and transfer them to a post. Do you have a section on this forum on how to do this or can you explain to me how I should go about adding pics?

Respectfully,

Meindert

P,S. Tell me if this attempt to post works.
