landed this spiffy COLT pistol and she looks very nice but ... that's where the joy ends. action was very raspy ... sharp corners on everything it seems ... nipples are rounded off and only two fire consistently ... so here is the primary questions ;

what is the thread requirements for this revolver?

and;

where can I find a set of new and good nipples for this revolver?

thanks for your answers. Ted

I got Tresso nipples from the Possibles Shop. The hand spring broke on the second cylinder and you can get replacements from Track of the Wolf, Dixie, Numrich and others like I did. It's another cool shooter that I don't shoot enough.

We need to know the maker to know the thread size, Track of the Wolf or Dixie gun works probably have them.

Mines an early Uberti and was made for Navy Arms. I needed to refile the ratchet teeth to get it to cycle correctly.
Actually it was a blessing in disguise as I picked it up for 125.00 dollars because of the ratchet problem.
If you have no experience in doing this get a professional that knows what he's about as it's easy to ruin a cylinder filing on ratchet teeth.
New dove tail front sight regulated for 25 yards six o'clock hold. Fun gun to shoot! Mike D.

Someone probably dry-fired it and peened the nipples. You could chuck each one, in a drill, and use a tiny file and emery cloth to make them usable. Test fit # 10 caps and # 11, to see which works best. Caps need to fit snug, to prevent them from falling off, and causing a chain fire. I use a wooden, tapered dowel(to push down), to make sure the caps are fully seated.

this is an un-fired revolver...[well it was before I got it]... with no marks on the cylinder where it was spun or the action worked...read flawless in appearance. except for rough and sharp edges everywhere and the nipples that were and are less then good quality...being different length and rounded ...[not peened]... and in terrible shape [quality control] for new cap nipples.

overall im very disappointed in the quality of this COLT revolver. it be a shame for the Colt folks to have ever allowed it to leave their quality control in such disgrace. it would be fine as a show piece but I don't collect show pieces...just shooters.

I have the action slicked up with a bit of stone work and it times correctly so all that is left is these terrible nipples to be replaced.

pistol shoots very nice when it goes boom but three of the nipples are so short that the least bit of fouling in behind the hammer makes it fail to fire and one nipple is so short...[.023 inch short]... it fails to fire everytime.

overall I think that Colt is in need of a lesson from uberti on sending out a shootable revolver. ... :shocked2: ... :hmm:

well I ordered nipples for it...as near as I can tell they are 12-28 so will see what we see when they get here.

I think they are on page two near the top and are 5.5x9 mm for the pocket .31 &.36 Colt and Remington pistols. I got the stainless ,they're the same price. Mike D.

according to the "Possible Shop" they are 12-28 thread and suppose to be the same as the Uberti c&b revolvers of the same style.

ill see when they get here and I also took out a nipple from my pieta and it is way different in the thread pitch.

my 1860 Uberti is in the shop so cant compare the nipple threads to it just yet...when it comes home that will be the first thing I do is to compare the nipple threads...[ok second thing] :idunno: ...

Was just up to your fair city last week end. We floated Birch Creek for nine days and spent the night at my daughters house on the way home. 120 miles and I rowed most of the way. Mike D.

now there is a post I don't see every day...LOL

hope the skeeters didn't pack you off. seems they are a bit over zealous this year. I hope you had a great float and did you get to see any animules?

this little shooter is pure joy to shoot when it goes bang and I finally stoned the action where I found a huge burr on the frame where the hand spring rides...removing this smoothed things up a bunch then stoning the hammer notch made the trigger acceptable as well.

cant wait for the nipples to arrive to begin to play with it and see what kinda loads it desires for good acceptable accuracy. seems 5 inch at 25 yds now is the best I came up with but the huge CLICK does nuttin for concentration on the sights.

Great to hear of a neighbor being in the same zip code. we will have to make it a point to get together for a meet n greet some day and send some smoke into the great beyond. have a great day neighbor... ...

I may be mistaken, but I believe that the Colts were made by Uberti and finished by Colt. Incidentally, I have noticed an upgrade in Uberti quality since they were bought by Beretta.

It sounds more like a 'Signature' series than a 2nd generation. Knock on wood, I have never seen a bad 2nd gen. but the Signatures quality was not the same. :(

Anything can happen. Mine is a C series 2nd Gen so it is from the first run and the hand spring broke when firing the 2nd cylinder in it.

The Alaska territorial matches are starting mid July at the range on the hwy just outside of Talkeetna. Mile 94 on the Hwy is where the range is at. They have a camping area and we have a big barbecue on Saturday night of the four day shoot.
I usually bring my Bowling ball mortar and shoot it at the barbecue if I can get enough time off work to attend.
They have many pistol matches to choose from to compete in.
Caught a few greyling and saw a lobo moving along the river bank ahead of us. Was very surprised to see a few wood ducks fly past us unless I misidentified them. Had no idea they nested in the interior. The mosquito's were in clouds and we had to wear head nets most of the time. Mike D.

The 2nd Generation Colts are my favorites. I have an 1862 Pocket Police and Pocket Navy along with two 1851 Navies. My all time favorite is the Pocket Police. I had the barrel shortened to 4.5 inches along with the loading lever to the appropriate length. I also had an Army style front sight cut down and mounted on it. Last, I had it outfitted with a set of pre-ban elephant ivory grips. If I could only own one hand gun, I would be hard pressed not to pick this one.

I agree with other posts...anything can happen, but, it's rare to find a bad 2nd Generation gun.

One thing I do not like about my Uberti and will have to correct is the chambers are about .0025 smaller than the barrel groove and are not all the same diameter.I will need to ream these out one of these days when I get the proper diameter reamer. Mike D.

so its not a signature colt...no scribble on the grip frame.

how do I tell which model I have? do the numbers tell the tale and if so then where do I find the number sequence that corresponds with the year or model?

all I know is that this is a real SUMTIN !! never thought id see a Colt with such crappy overall works.

im bound to make it a keeper tho...just hope it don't keep nickeling me tho.

my number is # 53xxx. all parts...barrel ,., trigger guard ,., backstrap ,., cylinder ,., frame ,.,... on the barrel has "address col. sam_l colt new-York us America" left side of frame sys "colts patent" ,., left side of trigger guard says "36 cal" ,., small brass bead front sight ,., typical notch in hammer rear sight ,., small nubs between chambers for hammer to rest on ,., 5 1/2 inch barrel.

sound like a second gen or maybe miss-represented to me?

Unfortunately, it's actually rather typical. Most of the Colt single actions, percussion and cartridge, of the last 50yrs are intended to be shown and not used. Even Colt manuals reflect this. Colt has only recently gotten its act together but if you want a really nice percussion Colt, buy a USFA.
