1862 Woes

You were right as usual, Mike! Thanks! This worked well; it now sets off the caps reliably.

I should take apart and measure my 1849's hammer, because I suspect this gun's hammer has the pivot hole shifted up and over slightly making it sit differently in the frame.

So, my Uberti 1862 Pocket Police finally arrived. I replaced the nipples with SlixShots and did the Duelist tune up. I took it to the range and loaded up the same load I shoot in my 1861 Navies, which is 25 grains of FFFg black powder, a lubricated wad, and a round ball. It seemed pretty accurate at 25 yards. The problem is the spent caps are ending up under the hammer and in the action. I believe the mainspring is too weak and the hammer is being lifted up by the pressure of the load going off. I would expect this with factory nipples, but not SlixShots. How do I solve this issue? Should I use some other brand of nipples? Replace the main spring?

Single leaf flat main springs are easy to make and heat treat with the exception of a Walker spring from what I can see . I use the 1095 flat spring assortment gotten from Brownell's for the ones I make.
All one needs is some files for shaping and a butane torch and some quenching oil. Purchase holes drilled of course before hardening and drawing the temper.
To large of a barrel cylinder gap is another contributing factor for misfires.

I have three Uberti's that had the same problem, a 1849 Pocket, 1862 Police, and a Pocket Navy. Replacement nipples helped slightly, but never could fire five shots without multiple cap jams. I replaced the main springs with ones made for a Pietta 1851 Navy. Ground them down to size, and cap jam problems went away. My little Uberti's are now fun to shoot. Still not pleased with Uberti, for the price I paid, I shouldn't have to have the additional cost of replacement parts and then tweak a brand new gun just to get it to function properly. I would never buy another small Uberti. No problems with either Uberti or Pietta when it comes to full size revolvers, they run fine for me right out of the box.

My experience exactly 1848 Wells Fargo , bought new beautiful little revolver did a smoothing up of internal parts very nice action but both before and after smoothing capjams , slick shots , filled hammer slot and finally doubled hammer spring for success.
Revolver is amazingly accurate with everything I have tried , up to 23 444fg and 20 of 3fg T7.
Fun but IMO too small and light for most mens hands makes it more difficult to use, especially accuratly.

I also have 48 WF and doubled the hammer spring. There was no way I could **** the hammer. Way too tight, hammer wouldn’t budge, so i just put on the new one, haven’t been able to test.
What’s different that a double spring worked on yours?
