A fishing trawler made an interesting find last Thursday.

The Newfoundland Lynx, an OCI (Ocean Choice International) trawling vessel based out of St. Johns, NL, was fishing for scallops just within the 200-mile limit off the coast of Nova Scotia when it unexpectedly hauled up a crate of Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle-muskets.

The find was brought to the attention of the Newfoundland Provincial Archaeology Office by the OCI’s Operations Manager and the rifles are currently undergoing conservation treatment.

Those rifles might have changed the course of the ACW.

....well, probably not, but it sure is an interesting find. I wonder if there is a whole shipwreck down there?

That is truly extraordinary that the Enfields are in that good of condition after having been under salt water for so long.

It no doubt says a whole lot about the way they were crated, though the crate is missing, and the wax paper and grease that were used to protect the Rifle Muskets.

I would be very interested to see some examples after conservation efforts. Are there any plans to try diving to find more and possibly the ship wreck?

No doubt that the entire crew have been arrested by the Mounties and accused of gunrunning....
