Has anyone used 1fg goex or anyother manufactuer,in your brown bess or bess carbine or anyother smooth bore , going in the morning before it gets blistering hot. bb75

In the olden days we used to get that 1f in plain brown wrapper cans marked "Musket Powder" from DGW. I did not know there was any other grade for almost ten years. We were lucky when we could get powder at all!

I'm very happy with having actual selections of powder today and have not seen any 1f in years.

It will shoot. It will also be very dirty and give you lower velocities.

Big Bore 75:

Yes, I am currently using Fg powder for all of my big bore muskets.

Right now I am using GOEX, but will switch to my supply of Elephant when that runs out.

Rebel:

Better have a hot burning Slow Match to ignite that Elephant powder. ::

The priming powder is GOEX FFFFg although I do have a can of Swiss FFFFg as well.

BTW, I haven't had problems with igniting Elephant powder. All of my FFg powder has gone off with little trouble. If the Fg is as good as the FFg, I'm not going to have a problem! :imo:

Actually I would like to see how the Scheutzen powder performs. I had used WANO Fg and CANNON grade in the past and both were great if a bit dirty powders. :imo:

I'll see what I can pick up if I can get to Dixon's Fair this Saturday.

WOOHOO! My 300th post! ::

Tele, sure gald that you are having better luck with Elephant than i, and a lot of others did. I almost gave up on flintlocks because of it. Stuff i had was REAL hard to ignite, and extremely dirty burning. I would like to tey the Scheutzen too.

There's a graybeard in West Virginia by the name of Monty that uses 1F Goex in his 75 cal. and swears it's the only thing to use.
He explained the knockdown power of it compared to my 2F at further distances. I admit, he made a good argument but I just can't see me changing. :results:

I use elephant powder to shoot skeet with my 12 ga flint fowler. It's always been super fast, as fast as Swiss or Goex.
The only problem with it is it burns so incredibly dirty. It doesn't work well in rifles for me, gives horrible accuracy...but shotguns like it alot!

I've used fg Goex in my Charleville and it did fairly well, but ffg works better for me. I have also used fg in my .577 Richmond, but it didn't like it. It does seem to foul worse than the finer powders. That's odd because in Ordnance tests in the 1850's they found that coarser powders fouled less than the finer rifle powders. That doesn't seem to be the case today from all accounts.

I still have some fg left and I might do some more serious comparisons when I get the chance. It's not the easiest powder to find. I got mine in PA.

That just goes to show you what a 155 years of powder evolution can do for the shooters! :m2c:

I have with very good results, but it is dirtier compared to FFg, other than that, I have no complaints...

Here's me report: started out light 75 grains measured by weight and pathced .715 rapine bag mould fired the round ball out , surprise by the fast ignition that was somthing and fast if not faster than 3fg swiss???, swabed the barrel oh boy nasty was expecting that, fired three more , got to say that was one respectable group roughly 2-3" thats the best I have ever gotton, next time I'm going off the bench to see the differecne,, oh before you ask yes I did other loads from 75 all the way up to 120, and that was all me shoulder could stand, na the Georgia heat was getting tough to bear started at 830 and ended at 1030 tried the 1 fg in my tule it did not like it non. but me bess liked it, ya know this sort of sucks kind of just wanted to use one grade of powder for all me smoke poles but darn thats not going to happen :: :: bb75
