I've hunted three days so far in the VA muzzleloading season and finally saw a deer while sitting. I've saw a few while walking, but the only buck I saw saw me first and you know the rest of that story. So, Saturday I sat down at 8 am and watched the squirrels and one hunter pass by and only heard three or four shots, which was few considering it was a doe day. It was sunny and the sky was blue and warmed up from below freezing to about 38 F. Nice napping weather and I took advantage of it. At 11:05 a doe startled me by running down the ridge just about 30 yards to my right. I waited til her head was behind a tree and got ready. When she came into the clear I pulled the trigger on Chambers' York number 2 I finished this past Spring. Load was 60 gr. 3F, 4F prime, .490 cast Eddie May RB, Walmart Red stripe pillow ticking, Stumpy's Moose Snot lube in a clean bore. Complete pass through breaking two ribs. Upon field dressing I notice she wasn't plumbed as I thought.

He field dressed in at 74 lbs.

Was she dead-right-there, or did she go a ways? Seems like 60gr behind any deer-sized ball is good medicine out to 50yds. Doesn't take much, does it?

Okay, I won't repeat that there'snothin' better than carryin' a long rifle into the woods. I'm happy for you. You won't find better eatin' meat.

Dead where she stood without taking a step. Only fell down hill.

I don't think it takes much powder. VA law requires 50 grains, but I don't think it would matter if you used less.
