I just made a post about how I was setting my sites, by using some carpet tape to try positions before I cut the slots. Secondly check out www.leevalley.com You can get a good starter set for around $35.00, and last fellow Michigander, What part of the state do ya live in. I have a few you may be able to borrow. Bill of the 45th P.M. me

Carpet tape - that's a good idea, I'll try that. Now if I can figure the right notch.

Thanks for the link to Lee Valley. I like the looks of the $35 basic set.

Oh, and I'm from Monroe - about as far south as you can be and still be in Michigan. :)

I've just started carving myself but I have to second the set of Flexcut chisel. Sharp as can be right out of the cool box they come in. The bandaids went pretty fast for me  but were appreciated. They fit the palm very well. The only others I had tried were the ones TOTW sells. I don't remember the name.

I got those very same chisels. Lo and behold, looking in the box I discovered bandaids..."what the heck are they for?", I wondered. Did I ever find out...them little buggers are sharp...I wish my mind was that sharp!

Want a good chisel? Get some of those, you won't be disappointed. :imo:

Delta,
Tho it is too late now, always consider putting the rear sight where it is in FOCUS. This moves foreward as you get older.
Also, browning or blueing (Darkening), the rear sight will help.
Regards,
Terry

The chisels/gouges; you won't go wrong with Millers Falls [american], Henry Taylor, Stubai or Two Cherries [$$}. Include a good stone/slip and a strop. Traditionalwoodworker.com is a site ya might check. [bandaides locally available]......Longshot

Good advice all.

I was beginning to think there were no decent chisels out there for under $30 a piece, and I'll also try the carpet tape to get the best sight picture before I cut the barrel.

See, just ask and you shall receive. The part about sharpening is right on. The tools can never be too sharp. Your biggest problem will be deciding on long or short handles :haha:

Say Bill, how goes it with your rifle project? I'm getting close to finishing my cherry rifle, but I'm having a hard time posting pics.

Well, I'll probably be posting some pic's in the next week or so. I'm removing all that wood that dosen't belong, and thinking about carving a little. Simple, nothing like rootnuke did, boy is that guy talented. I'm going to finish this one before I work on the .32 I ordered, or the 1840's .58 smooth rifle I plan on restoring, or the 20 gauge fowler, that's half done, or the .45 CVA pistol kit that I'm revamping. And in my spare time I have eight insurance fraud investigations, and two divorce cases to do. And to think I'm retired.
