I have never tried to max out a load in my JB 20 ga. fowler. Can't think of an intelligent reason why I would want to. :idunno:
I do prefer moderate charges in the 50 to 70 gr. range.

I glad I am not the only one that uses moderate charges
I was beginning to think I was the only one
I don’t think of my 55 grains of FF as a light charge

Never been part of the magnum mindset.
Nothing wrong with that if that that what you think it takes

Actually, the only way to determine a max load a gun will tolerate is to buy two of them, identical. Load one up until it self destructs in your face. After you recover, load the second gun just a bit below the failure level of the first.
As I said, I cannot think of an intelligent reason why anyone would want to load a gun to max. :idunno:

I wasn't really wanting to max out my load. I just wanted to make sure I stayed well under the max. I have no desire to beat up my gun. By the way, does anyone lube their nitro card over powder. I'm still workin on loads and wanted to try something different. I read VM Starr's article about using two thin cards over powder but didn't see anything about lube.

two and a half drams of powder , and one ounce of shot. with number four or five shot . that should kill rabbits, squirrels and pheasant. replace the shot with cushion over the powder , a round sixty caliber ball and a overshot card on top, and you have a deer gun.

When I use thin cards on the powder I also carry a little amount of home made lube.
When the fouling starts to get crusty I add a blob between the cards and then ram down. It keeps it soft for a couple of shots then.

When I was working up loads I reasoned that the reason modern loads are what they are is because that's what fits in the shell. That being said, I further reasoned that a 12 ga equivalent load could be put in a 20 ga muzzleloader and tried 90 gr of FF and 1-1/4 oz of shot. I will not do that again :shocked2:

The gun might be alright with the load, but the gun's attachment to the ground was NOT. :shake:
The recoil level was, to say the least very least, uncomfortable and I would think not conducive to keeping the one piece stock in one piece.
I have now settled for 75gr of FF and 1oz of shot.

I agree, unless I am hunting turkeys, but my standard load is 70 grains of 2Fg and 7/8 ounces of shot.......robin

Besides the FACT that "max loads" are decidedly dangerous, it's wasteful of powder/shot & UNNECESSARY, imVho.
(You cannot kill game "deader" than dead.)

My 14-bore DB does well on squirrels, rabbits, etc. with really mild/moderate loads. I use #6 shot for most all small game & #1 buck for BBQ pigs to 60 pounds or so.
(Hogs get their medicine from my "more or less" .58caliber Zouave carbine. - I refuse to argue any more about what the Zouave is/is not.)

just my OPINION, satx
