I'm having my TC "flint" 50 cal.Hawkens barrel reamerd out to 28 gauge smooth bore (55 cal). What size balls and patches do you guys use ..thanks ?? Powder charge too?

.490, double patched, 70g ffg

Mainly because I have a whole bunch of .490 balls from having the .50 cal barrel.

ok accuracy to 40, or maybe 50, yards

I would choose a ball plus patch diameter that is .006 to .010 larger than the bore ID. This gives a lot of possibilities. The thicker the patch, the more lube in the combination.

I had a TC 56SB (.564 ID)and had a lot of trouble finding a combination that worked well. I had to buy special sized balls from TotW. I sent this barrel to Bob Hoyt and had it redone to .62 cal rifle just to bypass this problem. The .535 ball worked OK but I already had several 54's.
