Id say you may need a little more lube on the patch when shooting that lot no. of 2f.Some of the older lots of goex seem to foul worse than the newer lots.Bill Knights experymenten was done using lehigh valley lube, liquid.Using bore butter a wax based lube may give different results to some degree.
Being a hunter like you roundball i have the utmost respect for you and i know you wont need more un one shot at a deer anywho. So i know you could make the 2f work in a hunting day if ya wanted to,if not you do have plenty of 3f :winking:Ive found with my 54 that 2f gives me better groups than 3f,and that is with a lot no. of powder that i thought fouled something terrible than the previous lot of 2f i had.Trouble is i have that lot of what i thought was once bad stuff that turned out to be good stuff almost gone.
Just courious what is the date on the bottom of the can?

Same prelubed patches I've always used...after the first set of shots, I then also included a wonderwad for the rest of the range session to get some more lube in there but it only went another few shots (to around 15) before having to clean again.

It's actually not a problem for me as I use 3F all the time anyway, I was just surprised by it and posted it...leaving right now for the range to try it again...humidity is a little higher today with rain threatening any minute...might make a difference...let you know

WhiskeyJoe sounds like you need to go to, or try a smaller ball....485"??

Rat

Probably just needs a wetter patch. Any liquid lube will do a better job of cutting the fouling when you load.:imo:

Just got back from another range session with the same .54cal rifle, lube, patches, balls, and 2F...same results with fouling...couldn't go more than 10-12 shots without having to clean the bore.

And this morning the humidity was much higher than the other day...for example, by the time I got done charging and loading a patched ball, the pan residue had already become damp / shiney from the moisture in the air...so, low humidity was not a factor...my 70grns of Goex 2F simply creates more fouling than my 60grns of 3F.

Id say you are right about the fouling given the results.I have a lot no. of 2f from sept.02 that i was shooten last weekend, reletive humidity was in the mid 30s.I was trying to determine if thick pillow ticklen would give me better groups than a thin muslin patch. In all i shot 35 balls between the 2 different patch material with no cleaning. The pillow ticklen was hard loading and needed a short starter.Put a preety good bend in my wood dowl ram rod.
I had to use a patch over the powder of the thin stuff or it would blow the patch sometimes.
These were 100gr loads.I use a caliper to measure compression of patch material. The muslin patch compresses at .06,the ticklen at .15 a much thicker patch. Both were lubed very genously.I was also testing my new patch lube brew of 4 parts melted beef tallow and 1 part murphys oil soap.Shot good and loaded a tad easyer than just plain tallow in the low humidity.Smells good too ::
I came away once again with results that show a thin patch with a over the powder patch is much more accurate than the thick stuff, and i also tried a buffer patch on the thick stuff a few times but it didnt really need it.This thin muslin patch with the lube i use can be loaded with out a short starter, just push it in with the thumb and use the ram rod.The next time out im gonna see just at what powder charge the muslin patch is blowing when usen a single patch.Maybe i will try a 535 ball also with it.May be able to get a good hunting charge around 80gr or so with out the buffer patch.
Experymenten is what keeps me intrested

Totally agree on the benefits of over powder patches or wads...I use Oxyoke wonderwads on all my full power hunting loads, regardless of caliber...
