I wouldn't shoot 4F powder in my Colt Police revolver.

It might be suitable for the little .31's and priming flintlock pans but IMO it's not good for much else (except maybe for firecrackers).

I am not sure that and advantage of 4F would be worth the trouble of trying to find it. 3f is what is suggested so I would go with that! Geo. T.

I was just curious since it had a somewhat reduced capacity. I don't have a need for 4F.

However I am quite interested in a '62 Police!

18-20 grains 3F,wad and .375 round ball and they are a lot of fun, just don't buy one for accuracy.....

"...just don't buy one for accuracy....."

No? I keep telling myself I want one with the 6 1/2" model for small game backup and the 3 1/2" barrel for the pocket! So just get a 4 1/2" version and don't concern myself with small game getting?

But I'm torn between liking the barrel assembly of the Navy and the fluted cylinder of the Police.

Uberti makes 5.5 and 6.5 inch Pocket Police and Pocket Navys, maybe Taylors are making shorter barrels. I have 5.5 in both and are great little backups but anything past 20-30 yards is iffy....

The Police is a scaled down 1860 Army with round barrel and creeping loading lever and the Pocket Navy is a scaled down 1851.......

In KISS terms Shoeless hit the nail on the head.
They both have the same frame but the cylinder and barrel/loading lever are different. I have an Uberty Polce and a 2nd Gen Colt Navy. I like the Colt better but it did cost me more. :)

I'm a Jacks Battle man myself. It has a superior fragrance and not being coated in graphite, lowers my carbon footprint.

The 1862 Police does not have the same frame as the 1860 Army.

The 1862 Police uses the same frame as the 1848 Pocket pistol but the frame and cylinder are rebated (stepped) to allow for the .36 caliber rather than the 1848's .31.

Because of the smaller frame, some find the 1962 Police a bit difficult to get a good grip on but they are IMO the most attractive of all the Colt pistols. :)

Uberti makes the 1862 Police in 4 1/2 inch, too (imported by Cimarron). I have one...an amazing little revolver that I never get tired of looking at.

Indeed, Taylor's does sell a 3 1/2" barrel for the Police. It does not have a loading lever assembly for it.

Taylor's also sells a carbine barrel for a '51. I've considered a '61 so as to get the military version and a stock. I'm not sure how long the barrel is though, but it seems it would make a nice little small game gitter.

Has anyone ever decided actually how much barrel. you need to burn 25 or 30 grains of black powder. I have never fired my 8 inch 1860 in the dark but my guess is that a shorter barrel would do ok in this area! Geo. T.
