Ok I am at the bottom of the 2f can of powder but my 3f runnith over. I shoot a 54 cal renegade rife use 80 grains of ff for roundball, use 100 of ff for conicals. can I use 3f in a 54 rifle and at what ratio. I use it in my lyman gp pistol in 54 cal. I have heard use 80% of 3f opinions and experiece please. thanks....

I shoot nothing but 3f in my .54's.
For roundball I shoot 80-100 grains 3f depending on the rifle and 80-90 grains 3f for conicals. Just be sure not to excede the manufacturers recomendations.

Well established industry rule of thumb is a 10-15% reduction in the powder charge when using 3F instead of 2F. ie: If a 2F charge was 100grns, use 85grns (or 90) of 3F.

You're just trying to keep the faster burning 3F pressure curve in the same general range of the 2F pressure curve.

My .54cal hunting load in a TC Hawken is:
90grns Goex 3F
Oxyoke prelubed wonderwad
.018" TC prelubed pillow ticking
Hornady .530

I always heard you reduce my 1/3. 80 2f -53 3f
But there are a lot smarter people on this forum than me. This seem to work for me though.

All good information so far. One thing, this was for my .50 Cal so may not be the same for your gun. I had to use wads to get that same shot grouping when using 3f vs 2f. So if you see you groups opening try using wads over your powder. This was using my Bobcat 1:48 and shallow grooves.
