Ordered a Lee Precision double cavity mold 300g conical.

Question:
I'm used to the performance of the Hornady greatplanes 385g, so if i was to try to handbdrill the botoms out concave for expansion, would I have good results, or should I not consider this and use a wad under?

Not new to shooting just wanting more "hands on" in my hobbie.

Try it. Personally I wonder how difficult QC will be, as in every cavity being perfectly centered and wallowed out enough to keep the weight of each projectile within what you consider acceptable tolerance.

Sounds like an interesting project. Keep us advised.

Maybe using a 1/2" ball burr cutter and some kind of stop or fixture to control depth.

What is your desired outcome? Unless the hollow base is perfectly aligned with the bullets centerline and removes the same amount of lead accuracy WILL suffer. I'd spend more time shooting.

What calibre are you shooting @ Hawken1820.50cal? I'm guessing .50 by your moniker. :)

Why not try a minie bullet/mold. I suspect this is the type of bullet you are trying to make? Lee molds are inexpensive items for load combination tests - if you find they don't suit, pass them on via this site.

Here's two examples of a .50 cal minie with stocks available in australia. I'm sure you would have more and varied selections Stateside.

Oh, and those minies should be cast dead soft.

Cheers, Pete
