Everyone does seem happy with "Goons" work. I'm one who prefers a close barrel cylinder gap myself for the reason you stated.
It is very important to have the correct length arbor and a screw in the arbor end will accomplish that. A washer in the arbor port does the exact same thing and is much easier with no potential downside.
