I had a third model Colt that had a latch that was a little too strong for my likiing so I replaced the spring. With that modification the loading lever would not stay latched, just like you are experiencing. Replaced the latch spring with one stronger and never had the problem again. Local hardware store usually has coil spring stock that you can make a new one from. Measure your current spring and cut a new one a little bit longer.
