Well, the BBT just dropped off my new Uberti 3rd Model Dragoon and I thought I'd post a few pics of it.

Initial impression is that it's very well made and fit and finish is excellent. The mainspring is pretty stout too. The timing seems to be very good on it and the grip wood looks good too. The trigger breaks very cleanly and is light - very nice! That'll help with accuracy.

I was hoping that this would fit the same brown "CS" holster as my 1860 but no-go - just too beefy, so I ordered a black dragoon flap from Dixie. At least there's no yankee mark :winking:

Here's the pics - last one showing a comparison to my svelt 1860.

Can't wait to get it all cleaned up and out to the range! :)

The only sad part of all of this is that I had to sell another gun to make the funds available, but I did get a good price.

There's nothing like the joy of black powder weapons straight to the door, I share your delight! That's a good looking dragoon. Now go find yourself a shoulder stock for it but be prepared to pay dearly for it. Enjoy!

O.S.O.K.: I just ordered a 1st Model Dragoon from one of your fellow Texans (Carl, at The History Store in Llano), it's a Uberti/Cimarron. If it looks as good as your new Dragoon, I'll be well pleased. And it will look good along side my Walker! Love those big guns!

I too have sold guns in order to buy another, and have always regretted it :( .

Enjoy your new gun!

Dryball (aka: Ken)

Yes, I know Carl - that's where I got my Pedersoli Kentucky 50 - nice guy! You will be pleased I am sure. Cimaron is a another Texas company :)

Be sure and post some pics after you get it!

Capt. Willard - yeah, this is just like getting a C&R gun at the door - and just as addictive! :shocked2: :)

Very nice OSOK.
I would like to get one also.
Cant make up my mind though.
I also want the 1851 colt in 36 cal.
Ive been told that was the sidearm of oue beloved
General Robert E. Lee.

The Dragoon makes that 1860 look like a '51. I imagine that if you put a Dragoon next to a '51, the '51 would look like a pocket pistol.

Thanks ya'll.

Yes, the dragoon is a beefy one. :shocked2:

82 Ariborn - the 1851 is a sweet one too - just another flavor that's all :v

I must admit I wanted the 1848 for the looks and the power factor - will be fun to shoot 50 grain loads! :) That, and I'm already set-up for .44 caliber having an 1860 and an 1860 "snubby" in that caliber.

I've got three 50 caliber ml's too. - Just my way of keeping the bp box small as I can.

The Dragoons are all...very stout.
So much so that they were almost always carried in saddle holsters rather than on the hip.

I can just see it now.....

"Mister Dillon...Mister Dillon...Ah thin ye wer rite about a-wearin' this har Draggoon in ah belt holster. It done pulled ma pants off rite thar in front O Miss Kitty!
That warn't tha bad part...Miss Kitty done said that iffen ah evar want ta come back ah either got's ta leave my Draggoon at home an keep ma pants up, or take a bath!"
:rotf:
zonie :)

OSOK. Nice pistol! dont feel bad..selling one to get another is the way I do it too!
yOU DID Very Well! 40 grains produces a
Great BOOM!!!You will surely enjoy it!

Dang, you Secesh's are making me want to get that Uberti Remington New Model Army that I have been lusting for a long time, but putting off because of other expenses. Nothing for me to sale (or that I want to sale). :(

I have noticed that when you are in a relationship with a woman you end up having to sell one gun to buy another. As a (now) confirmed bachelor I can buy the ones I want without having to negotiate with anybody about the guns I buy!!!

that Dragoon holds 50 gr. loads? should be quite a smokecloud. that's what I use target/plinking in my .50 Hawken.

Range report! :)

Only got to shoot two cylinders today but did try 40 and 50 grains of Pyrodex P.

Used CCI mag #11 caps which were loose but did fine after a pinch. The Pyrodex was capped with a wonder wad and Hornady .454" balls, which seemed a bit loose - in fact, with the 50 grain loads, a couple came back out with the ram! So, going to try .457" balls next time.

It definately liked the 40 grain loads better than the 50 - both were very mild when compared to a 44 mag. The pistol is so heavy that it really doesn't roll much in your hands. It's fun!

Here's the pics:

The target shows the 4th, 5th and 6th shots of the 40 grain loads after determining point of impact. Point of aim for this target is the lower left hand corner.

Distance is 40 meters, so I'm pretty impressed!

All in all a very good experience and I can't wait to get back and play with some more loads and components.

The Uberti and Colt (Uberti by proxy) .44's have slightly larger chambers than ohter brands and you'll find a better fit with .457" balls. You can relieve a bit off the right side of the rear sight notch to move the pattern over to center. Now you know why they were called "Dragoons"...gotta drag'em around on a horse! Or use'm as a horse anchor!! :haha:

O.S.O.K. that's a fine looking pistol!

In regards to the lever backing-out, did you shave-off a little bit of lead as you rammed the ball home or did it almost slide in by itself? If you shaved-off some lead, be carefull if you switch to .457 balls, you might be in for a fight. It is possible that only one chamber was overbored.

My Walker uses 50 gr. 3F Goex, a ox-yoke wonder-wad and a .454 ball. None of the balls jump in the cylinder during recoil. Chuck Dixon in PA. told me that the Uberti's all take .454 balls. The Walker was sighted in for 75-100 yds. At 25 yds. I aim 6.5 inches low from the center of the bull. I didn't have to file the notch in the hammer, just lucky I guess.

How's the fit on the cylinder / wedge pin? Sometimes when real new it's a little too tight. So at the range I wipe a little Butch's Bore Shine on the cylinder face to get more shooting in before the cylinder binds-up. The Bore Shine solution dissolves BP fouling and since it has a drying agent in it, no problem with a too wet cylinder causing a missfire. Home-made stuff on this Forum will also work of course.

Anyway, just HAVE FUN with the new shootin iron :)
All the best, Dave
