Same here. But maybe a .40 caliber ear plug inserted by an accurate and patient man might suffice?
Most all bear hunting in that era was with hounds. The bear took a tree or was put to bay by the hounds. Not much chance of a still target.
Of course the conical bullet existed then. My 40 caliber REAL weighs 180 grains, that would go a long ways in leveling the playing field.
 
Makes sense. I’ve never seen that in pics before, and being new to ML, was not something I thought of.

Lots of old southern rifles had ‘em. A couple of mine do.
