HI all
I got a 40 cal. flint lock and I am wondering what to use for round ball. Also how much powder do I use ? Do I use 2x or 3x ? what do I use in the pan 4X ?
Thanks a lot Stan

I have a .40cal Late Lancaster with a GM 1:48" barrel, and settled on the following for a range practice / plinking / small game load:
3grns Goex 4F prime
40grns Goex 3F main
.018" pillow ticking
.395" ball

Looks like Roundball and myself shoot ours the same way.

40 grains of 3F under a .395 (Hornady) with .018 pillow tick (pre-lubed from Ox-Yoke).

My 40 has also been my deer rifle for the past few years (legal where I hunt) and when going after Bambi (self imposed 50 yard max shot), I bump the powder up to 60 grains.

I use a 395prb w/010 patch. 25gr-3f for target work and small game, 50gr-3f for whitetails. Prime with 3f from the horn.

Yes, Muzzleloader Builder Supply.
Member 'birddog6' put me on to Nylon muzzle guides years ago.
Light, quiet, and no metal to metal wear whatsoever

I've been looking at those bore guides myself, how do they hold up?. I'm going to need a bunch of stuff from either MBS, or Track in the next week or two. A bore guide, a 5/16th ramrod, some O.P. wads, etc, etc. I have a .40 cal. that will be in my hands soon also.

My .40 is a Late Lancaster flinter and really likes 40 grains of 3F, a .390" lead ball and a .024" ticking patch lubed with Hoppes #9 Plus BP lube. I prime with 4F.

I am using 35grs of fffg as the charge, and the same powder size for priming, a .375 ball with a thick patch and she is a tack driver. a Neil Fields Lancaster, with a swamped Collerain barrel and Jim Chambers lock.

cheers

Gordon

Seem to last forever...been using them on my short-starters, all my range rods, and carry one slipped onto a jag in my pocket when out hunting for probably 10 years...have never worn one out...cost a couple bucks

I knew it! First he agreed .50's were his go-to rifle caliber, then backtracked to .45, and I asked if soon he'd be on to .40...

Can his all-purpose .36 be far behind!?

:hmm:

LOL

Well, yes, you're right about that. The .36 is my most taken out and shot rifle...........but that's today. Tomorrow? :idunno:

I, too, have as Late Lancaster and mine seems to like the same powder, ball and patch that yours likes. Only difference is that I have found that spit works best for target shooting in my rifle. Wish I had a recent target for show and tell.

For Alden, I have found that a good breakfast of grits really tightens my groups. I can't tell that cheese grits make much difference but they sure don't hurt anything either. :blah: :haha:

I have found from personal experience that those green chilis will certainly tighten something and set fire to it, too. :haha: :haha:

But, they are Mmmmmm Good!
