There's forties and then there's forties. Tested two 48" twist Green Mountain barrels, 28" and 38" long. Just when I thought that maybe I'd found the right combo the groups opened up. Still have the 28" long one and have more tests to run with the paper patched hollow base round nose.

After Many unresponded to requests I stopped reaching out to Lee. Is anyone makes progress I would still go for 1 or maybe 2 sets.

Good luck!

Anytime you see one of the old Lyman/Ideal adjustable length ".44 core molds", they throw a lead rod about .39" in diameter that will paper patch up to use in .40 bores. Then you can adjust the length to however long of a bullet your rifle can shoot to how far. For close range muzzleloading hunting you can easily out perform many of the late 1800's hunting cartridge guns.
This picture shows one of those molds with a replacement base plug to give a round-flat nose instead of just flat.
