Just built an older TC hawken from a kit with the 50 x 1 in 48 barrel and want to put an IBS 40 cal barrel on it. I have noticed that TOTW seems to have the most decent pricing unless the forum can point me elsewhere.
Is the 32" 40 cal barrel with the 1 in 48 proper for the roundball?
Is there a 1 in 60, 66 or 72 out there that might be more suitable to round balls?

Your input and recommendations?

Thanks,
Brett

Brent, TC actually made a .40cal caplock called the Cleland Match Rifle, special match sights, etc, and it was a 1:48" if that's any indication...

Brett,

I just got a new rifle built with a Green Mtn, .40cal. It has a 1:48 twist and shoots very well. I use 50gr 3f, and a .395 ball with .017" ticking patches.

A slower twist may well require more powder.

My .40 has the 1:48.....it's more accurate than I am with roundballs.

Brett,

1 in 48 is a good twist for a .40 cal, but it will be a bit heavy in a 15/16 T/C Hawken barrel. Little bore and fairly thick barrel... Is this just a target gun?

Just percolating on this.

This will be for paper punching and trail walks at the club level!
Got a 32" 50, shot lots of O/U shotguns so weight isnt really a factor.
Mostly looking for something out of the norm, a little different, a little less shoulder push and anpther gun to cast for!
The GM ibs 38" seems a little too much and the 32 would look good on the stock.

Here's a 32" x 15/16" barrel on a TC Hawken stock:

I have a T/C Hawken with a 32" long GM, 15/16" .40 cal barrel. It is a bit muzzle heavy but really isn't that bad and really hangs well on a target. As others have said, the 1/48" twist is a correct roundball twist for the smaller calibers. Mine is superbly accurate, is a real pleasure to shoot, with almost no recoil, and has become my favorite sqirrel rifle.

TOTW was where I bought my GM .40cal 32" 1:48 twist IBS barrel. I checked around a good bit for best pricing and TOTW appeared to be the place.

I had a Cabela's Hawken (Investarms) and the extra 3 inches in length (over the original 29" .50cal barrel) isn't that unwieldy (is that a word?). Anyway, I had to take about 1/16" off of the back end of the underrib to get the barrel to fit, but that was really a minor thing.

More importantly, the hammer did not line up squarely with the nipple on the .40cal barrel. Rather than messing with the original hammer, I bought a spare hammer and made that one line up with the .40cal barrel. I wanted the original hammer intact, because I still use the gun as a .50cal for hunting deer, and swap the .40cal in for target shooting.

Those were minor problems (to me anyway), BUT since you have built the rifle to install one of these barrels, I can't think that you'll have any problems with fitting it.

I am greatly pleased with the accuracy of the .40cal barrel and it was well worth the price (including my extra hammer). I can shoot 1" groups at 50yds easily with the .40cal. I can't see better than that, so it's plenty good enough!

Regards, and good luck with your project!

I can see using that thick barrel in some situations. I often carry my MLs for long walks and a heavy barrel might not be ideal for that situation, so I thought that I would mention the concern. Sevral of my friends bought Senecas or Cherokees to put light .40 cal barrels on for that reason. I kept mine in .36.

Just thought that I would mention it.
