Mine opens tomorrow and hopefully I can manage to get out. I liuve at 5,500 feet just northwest of Denver and it snowed for several hours this morning. My intended opening day excursion is planned for near timberline at 10,000 to 11,000 feet. Hope I can get there!

Will be packing a .50 since it is the minimum legal caliber for deer if one is shooting round balls. Going to a .45 requires a conical.

Good luck and try not to break anything in the snow...your gun or your bones!

That's funny. Several years ago I broke a bone in the snow such that a Moses stick is now mandatory!

just checked the weather at higher elevations and its better than down here. Crazy!!

Even if you guys don't connect first time out, that fresh snowfall might make for some great scenic photos

I use mine for both with good results. Deer three for three

I use 60 gr of 3fff for deer loads and 20 for small game. My target load is 40 gr and supprisingly all three loads hit point of aim. I keep my shots to about 60 yards or less. I plan on doing some more experimenting on loads but after about 60 gr my patches started to blow through and my velocity stopped increasing and accuracy decreased. 60 gr of goex gave me about 1900 fps. I may try an over powder wad in the future but so far this rifle has proven to be very accurate with all loads.

I have shot deer here in NH with my 40 caliber. I take choice shots only. They drop and die within 30 yards. These have been from stands. Hunting by stalking I use my 54 Caliber as penetration is way better.

For the charge I use in my 40 35 grains of Goex 3fg for targets, and small game. For deer I double the charge to 70 grains of the same powder.

I use a 40 cal all the time. Just make sure you know the regulation. In Kansas the rule states a .40 diameter projectile or larger. I got fined and had to go to court for using a .390 prb. I got off the hook but others might not be so lucky.
