.40 for hogs?

Yup. I'm up here in the Northen Vt area, and the reserves occassionally lose a few. We smoked up four a dozen years back. The largest was 378 pounds...drained, hanging at the butcher with NO HEAD and skin...Sobering Large Tusks 4 inches long and so heavy just fresh gutted it broke a oak pallet when we (2 big boys required) pulled it out of the Chev shortbed. After that experience, seeing first hand the construction of these things, I suggest using enough gun. NOT something under .40. Use careful shot placement. Keep a tree handy. They make for big, tasty Shake n Bake chops and lots of good maple smoked sweet sausage! I'll stick to .50 cals. .22 rim? Good luck w that.
 
I have killed a pickup load of Texas hogs with a .40 Vincent loaded with 50 grains FFFg and it works fine. Keep the shots under 50 yards and put the ball where it will do some good. We hunt them at night with .223 here and it puts them down. Very seldom are they over 200 pounds. :idunno:

FWIW, we hunt in teams, one man with the WMR or muzzleloader and a backup carrying an 835. My handloads can push 2&1/4 oz. of hard lead #4s to 1250fps. At 15 yards the gun puts all but a few shot in one ragged 1.5" hole, will pulverized a pig femur ball bone or break a 2x4 in half. Point blank blasts a slug sized hole clean through the pine. Hope it works as good on hog skulls if we ever need it.
