.400 Round Ball Mold

I need to find a round ball mold that casts .400 round balls. Can anyone help? Can I find someone who can custom make a quality mold? Thanks very much.

I bought one of DGW's "Kentucky" style brass molds for a .400 RB. Doesn't do a bad job, but the brass is a bit soft for the sprue cutter to do much good, so I use wire cutters instead. You either need to wrap the handles or wear heavy gloves while using it, though.

Jeff Tanner will make you a dandy for not much money. If you can get by with a .395 ball and a little thicker patch, you can get by for even less money with a LEE mold.

Lee used to make a .400 mold. I have one.

I also have a .400 mold and think that it was a Lyman or Lee.

They are not in regular production, but they do make them form time to time. While they are listed as not available, I would call.

Bugging people is how I found mine years ago. I had to pound them in, but they were quite accurate.

I assume you're looking for .40 cal round balls, in which case I would just go with .395 and see how it works. If you've done that and need a .400, then watch ebay, as I've seen Lyman molds in that diameter, several times. They show up fairly regularly. I've been wanting to try a .390 and want a Lyman, but haven't seen one yet, just Lee.

As mentioned, Jeff Tanner. What patch thickness do you use? I have found over the years that a smaller ball and thicker patch works best for me. That may not be the case with everyone though. I use the thickest pillow ticking or denum patches between .020 and .025. Part of it depends on how deep your rifling is. I have sluged all my bores and use calipers to determine the exact land and groove dimensions.
