Have a TVM pistol with a 40cal Green Mountain barrel on its way to my front door. What is a good starting load witf 3f? I was thinking maybe 15grains? Thanks, Flintleather

My 2006 Dixie Catalog has a standard load for their 40 cal. Dixie Flint Pistol at 25 grains. So I would think 15 grains is a good place to start.

Rule of thumb is 1/2 caliber for pistol or small caliber rifle and even with caliber for rifle. Just for a starting place of coarse and you can go up or even down from there. That's where I like start. You get to know your gun better when you go up and down the scale to see what it can do.

Starting at 15 grains sounds good. I have one in .50 and shoot 30 grains as my accuracy load. With a .40 recoil won't be an issue.

I have a .410 caplock that I use for competition: 15 grs 3F at 25 yds, 30 at 50. Back in the days when I knew how to shoot, this pistol & load used to win matches.

Thank you all for the info. I can't wait to get it out and start working up some loads. I think one of the best things about Muzzeloading is finding each guns personality and likes. Flintleather

I've never heard that. Great little tip!
