The same BIL who had the civil war musket and Mule ear carbine had this. It was casually thrown in a box with balls and caps so I'm thinking it is a replica. It is in pretty rough shape.

Your kit comment steered me in the right direction, Markwell Arms. Guess I'll keep it for a paperweight...
 
Looks like a kit that was never finished, things need to be inlayed, side plate fashioned and more by the looks of it. That would be a fun project, finish it up, make it Nice!
