Speaking of 1858 Remington in .44 caliber, what is you optimum load - those of you who shoot one?
Also, what the max, not that it is accurate.
My 24 grains of 3F do a pretty good job in the accuracy department.
Thanks again.

Most manufacturers recommend 30 grains as max charge. Shooters will often load the remington with all the powder the chambers will hold and still put a bullet down on it. The steel frames are stout enough to handle these heavy loads but probably not as accurate.

I like 35 grs. 30 is a lil mousey to me. 40 is just as accurate but starts to bang my knuckle against the trigger guard.

Page 245 of the Gun Digest Black Powder Loading Manual 4th Edition by Sam Fadala:

The Navy Arms 1858 Remington New Army revolver shoots "optimum" with 35 gr FFFg GOI black powder under a .454 141 gr Speer round ball. MV was 907 fps with ME of 258 fpe. However, he also says that 20 gr FFFg plus cornmeal filler with that same ball is a better (more accurate) target load; it had 591 fps MV and 109 fpe ME. Max load was listed as 35 gr FFFg bp or 40 gr FFFg Pyrodex P. That's all that fits.

I'd rather give up a smidgen of accuracy(I only shoot one handed anyway)and keep the buck and roar. I personally do not like wimpy loads but you shoot what's right for you. Actually you can load 45 grs. of FF Pyrodex. with a wad on top and ram it down, then load the ball. It raps your knuckle on the trigger guard pretty good tho.

35 grains of FFFg is the BOOM load.
30 grains of FFFg is the accuracy load.
Since I sawed the barrel off to 1 inch, I go with BOOM!!! :haha:

I find 25 grains of 3F and .454 balls to be the most accurate load in my Uberti. I don't know about the max because I've never tried to see how much would fit. I found accuracy dwindling as I went up in charge, so I stayed at 25.
