Is it a custom or factory barrel?

Sounds like a .44 to me, .45s typically use a .440 or .445 ball.

If someone went to the trouble to stamp .437 ball on the barrel. I would guess a .440 ball would be too tight, otherwise they wouldn't have bothered. You probably won't find .437 balls in your local sporting goods store, but you can order them on line. I know Track of the Wolf has them and there are probably other sources as well.

Balls made for .44 caliber, are generally for cap and ball revolvers, and measure over .45.

It is a .44 caliber gun. You will see a lot of older guns from the 60's & 70's shoot a .433" ball and they were .44 calibers. My two cents :v .

It can be called whatever caliber you wish. These days, I believe, we have become too standardized in our thinking. This is due to many of the ml rifles in use being factory made cookie cutter versions of each other. Back in the day bore sizes varied with the builder, wants of the buyer and history of the barrel being 'freshed' after a period of use. Don't sweat wat it is called. Find the ball/patch that works and enjoy.

It is, maybe then, a .44. If it uses .437" ball, it ought to take .440" ball as the ".45" does. I use .440" ball in my .45s but sometimes I cast up .445" ball to shoot. There is no difference in accuracy or ease of loading between the two.

I have a .45 (.44?) that recommended a .437" ball. I just used .440" ball with great success.

I have a rifle with a .445 barrel. It will shoot .440" balls with a thin patch or .433" balls with a thick patch. You may have the same size barrel.

To tell the truth, I didn't know that .437" balls could be bought. I cast anyway and my 2 molds are good enough to suit me.
