Homemade 18 in 44 cal percussion pistol. Mics at .430. Smooth bore made from a center fire barrel unknown. Proofed at 100 grains and shot hundreds of times at 35 grains. 175.00 shipped.

The consensus on bears pistols is that they were used by hunters who used dogs to tree bears. The long sighting radius gave increased accuracy to make a good shot on the bear.

They were carried in the thick brush and were much more handy than a rifle would be in such situations and were easier to wield when handling dogs.

We’ve got a number of Southern and Appalachian bear pistols in the historical record and many are very neat.
