i too have the '44' 58". its the fllipietta. should i use the 440 rb's, or get some other size rb.

If you are refering to the '58 Rem revolver no, the .440 is for rifles. For the revolver you need a .454 or .457. No patch is used with revolvers.

Or maybe a 0.451". Really can't tell until you check the diameters of the chambers. If no micrometers are available the easy way to check is to set a rb on the chamber. Oughta almost be going in but not so as you can force it with your thumbs.

I 'spose a .451 will work in some, but i haven't had one yet that a .454 doesn't work as well, or better in. I like a good tight fit in the chambers.

Pietta recommends .451's for their 1858 Remington. The ones I own and have shoot all like a .454 rb. It was just a touch tight on one or two but it shaves a good ring.

My son and I shoot only .454's in our Pietta 12" Buffalo, where the manufacturer recommends only 15 measly grains of black powder :idunno: :youcrazy: . Just doesn't make any sense to us.

.454's do very well for sure! And so does 35 grains of real black!

The Sheriff's Model works well with the 451's. The 454's shaved too much (so I've got yet another mold). The shorter loading lever comes into play. With the decreased leverage less shaving makes for more consistent loading. Reduces the vertical dispersion.

I have the same revolver and I use 457rb it shaves a good ring also. So far no problems with 30gfffg.

I don't own a Sheriff's model. What you say about leverage and force with the shorter loading lever makes sense. My pistol loading stands come complete with a flip-down shelf for supporting the smaller barrel so consistency and therefore accuracy can be maintained.

ditto rebel and smokin'. .454 rb shaves a good ring of lead off for snug fit and safety. a .357 caseful of 3F is a good plinking load for the .44. room for a felt atop.
