45 cal max load?

For y’all that have stated you successfully harvested animals with a 45.

What did you feel was your max effective range?

About 100 yards. Got a couple at about 70+ yards and felt very comfortable with the shots. And, BTW, they were one shot kills.

My go to rifle for antelope and Deer is my Hot Rod Hawken 45. It shoots a 408 gr paper patched bullet at 1400 fps.
I try to stay under 150 yards. I know that load would be lethal at 200 and beyond, the rifle is more than capable.
This pronghorn was killed at 150 yards with my 45.

How you do it just baffles me. 408 grain bullet?! I have a hard enough time soaking the energy from 285's

Actually the 408 recoil isn't that bad with the limb saver recoil pad.
With the Cresent plate it was brutal.

I got a couple of maxi ball 240 grain, packets with a T/C .45 Hawken I bought this summer. I plan on trying them this weekend on deer opener. 70 grain of 2f. First time not using rb.
