Heres one just finished!! The head is forged from a hunk of 45 cal muzzle loader barrel, with a tool steel bit forge welded in for the edge, got the pipe bowl started with a fuller that I made form a coil spring, then the rest was done with files. The handle is Curly Maple 19 1/2 inches long with a turned deer antler tip thats about 3 inches long for a total of 22 1/2, there a turned antler plug at the top. I used aqua fortis for the stain and its nice stuff love it. A stitched tooling leather band and some tack work, And my brand of file work. Yes it is drilled for smoking.

Another fine job, you been doin more than just watchin that Donelson ain't chya.

I've got a 1" .50 Renegade barrel I picked up in a trade, the bore is GONE all I wanted was the lock, stock an triggers.
Put aside a couple bars of soap for me an it's yours,
What say you?

Darrell, very nice work!  A friend made a 'hawk for me using a piece of 45 barrel, and it is amazing what can be accomplished with a hammer and files! And, of course, TALENT!

Can you actually smoke them?

Sheesh, if I had that I would start smoking again and the doctors and finger waggers be damned!
:nono:

Nice work!

I have a heck of a time forge welding Hi carbon to low carbon. Every time I try to put the two pieces together they won't weld. I've been welding some time now and have made several hawks by forge welding hi carb into axe heads.
What's the secret to get a bit to weld into the head? Do you mig weld it in there to keep it from moving around? Wrap the whole mess with wire? Any suggestions?

I have not tried it but those I know that forge weld all use 20 Mule Team Borax on all weld surfaces when it goes in the fire. Get it orange and beat it good!

well I use a simple HC steel like files for the bits, and alot of borax dont be stinjy with it, and the only secret is I feel make sure your getting enough heat so the steel is a bright yellow and the flux is dancing around on the surfice. Then take it out and quikly but not hard just tap the steel with the hammer a few hits is all you will have time for while its yellow, then stop reflux reheat and repete till its solid thats all I do.
