Moose snot averaged over 100 FPS faster.
Qestion: Why??? Your comments welcomed.

This Douglas barrel will one ragged hole at 50yards with my 50 grain load of Swiss 3fg.
70 opened the groups to a best today of 1.5" acceptable for deer any day.

The ballistics...I would not hesitate to take a whitetail out to 100 yards with this load, but would prefer bad breath ranges...who wouldn't? :imo: :m2c:

Side note: I pulled the 50 yard target which is in my woods after I cleaned up and spooked THREE DEER that were just 50 FEET behind the backstop watching me! GO FIGURE! :haha: :haha: :haha:

Oh, yeah. I DID use birddog6's patch knife. Cutting patches was a breeze that knife is sooooo sharp!
And NO stitches! :blah: :blah:

The stitches will come.....the day you've taken a shot at a deer and are then standing there "looking around" for another one while cutting your next patch !! ::

Damn- I sure was hoping the moose snot would prevail. It seems to do OK in the musket, but I havne't tried it in the rifle.
: I must wonder if results might be different without wiping between shots? Guess some day soon, I'll have to do some BP shooting with the rifle.

"Because Moose's with runny noses are somewhat faster than 6 bird dogs..."

Musketman. That was really, really, BAD. BAD JOKE ALERT!!
No go to your room and don't come out 'till you can play with the boys nicely! :youcrazy: :shake: :nono:

Daryl. I was too. However the target and chrono tell the story, but only on this day with this rifle with this miserable excuse of a shooter.
The Moose Snot did sooooooooooo well in the 1:48 .50 with p.r.b. did an unexcelled job as a protectant and lube, I just can't believe it won't due in the accuracy department.
Since the Snot was on average 100 fps FASTER and in that rifle both lubes loaded way too easy with the .015 patch I'm thinking if I get time perhaps give the Snot another work out with .018 ticking as this rifle performs best with a tight patch.

Yes- usually an increase in veloctiy is derived from a slicker shooting combination or an increase in pressure, caused from some other reason.
: You mentioned it shot well in the .50? Imust hav missed that. Now, what are the differences in bores from the .45 to the .50 other than size? - as in, # of lands or button rifled or cut rifled? Gross atmospheric condition change could also skew the results. Button rifled meaning very shallow, .005" or shallower. With cut rifling, the grooves will be .008 to .012 deep, up to a Getz barrel with .025" deep rifling.

thankyou, Maxiball for all of your work and time on this venture. It is Very much appreciated.

Gee, Daryl, thanks for the THANKS.
Keep in mind my alterior motive in all this is primarily to have FUN while learning, and enjoying the wonerful experience of shooting.
Especially learning about the flintlock. What a wonderful tool to learn and master, so simple, yet so complicated.
Black powder, a seemingly simple intimate mix of three ingredients that haven't changed in thousands of years, yet NO ONE truely understands black powder.
Learning is FUN.

Well crumbs,

You are pure of thought and of a unblemished heart, aren't you? Moose Snot KNOWS when you've been bad, or good.

The chronograph shows the Moose Snot is clearing the gate faster. Could be this "too slick" concern has some merit. Did you note the variations?

Don't know nuttin about the Swiss powder. That's the good stuff. Maybe you ought to be using plain 'ol Goex so the barrel fouls up good and proper like they's supposed to.

I'm gonna get out and try with swabbing every five, and then three shots. But I'm getting fairly good returns with my 1:48" .54 anyway. I'll try hotter loads in my .50 I guess. That rifle never did like PRB in anything but light loadings.

Yeh, the varitaions are at home, so I don't have exact figures, but the e.s. and variance was within normal parameters.
I do believe in your creation. It more than has merit, I already know it's a great lube and preservative. I need to shoot it in a rifle that I know performs well, like the .5" Jeager at 50 yards.
We'll try 'er out.
Soon as I get off these 12 hours days! :curse:
