I wrote a post on felt wads the other day...was trying to make my tc 50 renegade shoot 275 maxi at 100 yrds. I placed a cardboard disc over the charge and no change. I'm not up on conicals, just prb. The same rifle shoots the ball great. Already have a custom 45 66 twist that shoots great; now I'm wanting to shoot conicals, not sabots in the 1.5" region. Do I need a rifle with a faster twist?
I don't want an inline; I have all the modern stuff I need.

thanks, Flincher

I've had Maxi-balls shoot great out of both .50 and .54 1:48 twist rifles.
All I can suggest is experimenting with powder charges.
I get the best accuracy out of 85-90 grains of 2f.

It is best to use the proper twist barrel for conicals, not an in-between twist. If you are happy with substandard accuracy, and perhaps NO accuracy at long range, then stay with the in-between twist. The shallow, .004" deep rifling makes the 48" TC twist, an in-between twist. It isn't deep enough to properly hold patched RB like the original Hawken's did, yet is a bit too slow in rate, for proper stabilization of conical bullets. A faster twist will shoot them better. In .50, the twist should be at least or faster than 36" for bullets in the 450gr. range. I just feel there is a limit to the accuracy you can expect from the slow twist with slugs.
: You may achieve 3" to 4" at 100yds. but the real test is at 200yds. How well does it shoot at that range. I would be much surprised if the slugs weren't keyholing at that range. The 48" twist is barely enough to keep the slugs point-on at 100 - let alone any further out.
; My last .50 slug barrel had a 24" twist, made by Harry McGowen, of St. Anne Ill. It achieved 1 1/2" 5-shot groups at 100yds. and exactly the same group size, 1 1/2" at 200yds.- off the bags of course. This means it was shooting 1 1/2 MOA at 100, but only 3/4 MOA at 200yds. My sights were hooded aperature front sight with Tang aperature rear sight.
: So - the proper slug barrel is a boon to accurate slug shooting. It all depends on what you want or will be satisfied with.

Thankyou so much Daryl, I just got it cleaned up and put away. Like I say, it shoots well at 60yrd. and closer with a ball. I think you can get another barrel from tc with a faster twist; wonder how good that would work? The rifle is like new but I'd never get my money back out of it or even close.

GREEN MOUNTAIN BARREL COMPANY sells IBO barrels for the Renegade. I have two of them. I bought them through Track of the Wolf, but look around, you might find better prices. They do make a 1:28 twist rifle barrel for your rifle.

The thing to keep in mind is the size of the barrel. If you have a .50 caliber it is probably a 15/16th barrel. If it were a .54 caliber then they are normally a 1" barrel. The right barrel is important here.

Green Mountain makes all the Knight Rifle company barrels which are known sabot shooters. My Knight Wolverine II will shoot big conicals but I have never tried them at distances further then 100 yards.

Perhaps what you might want to do is test some different kinds of conicals in the barrel you have. The reason I say this is my .54 caliber Renegade will shoot REAL conicals very well, but the Great Plains Conical not at all. It will also shoot Maxi Hunters and Maxi Ball. Just a thought.

Thank you, my rig shoots the 275 maxi in a hole at 30 yards but falls apart at 100 just teases me!!! I've tried lots of bullets. My round ball gun has a Jim Carpenter barrel-66 twist; it shoots so good it burns my hand to pick it up!! I will check out green mountain and call Jim about the conical barrel. Gettin excited, Flincher

A tip:

If you order directly from Green Mountain, you'll pay full MSRP...I'd suggest you have a ML retailer get it for you...I've ordered a couple through Ed Cain, Cain's Outdoor in West Va...good place to do business with for TC and GM components

Roundball, I just checked Cains, and apart from perhaps a very special deal, TRACK has it all over them in barrel blanks prices. I didn't check the replacement-type barrel prices. Perhaps they'll dicker on the price, but listed prices run upwards of $20.00 more. Perhaps I read their product list wrong?

I have no idea if you read their price list wrong or not...you did mention barrel blanks...I was just trying to help this individual based upon a couple experiences I've had regarding Hawken/Renegade drop-in barrels...If someplace else has better prices then he might want to use someplace else...
