I got a booklet from a man that used 4f in all his hunting loads I was just wondering if anyone had tryed any of his loads out ect and what happened .he was going to try and market it as a pre loaded shell, and used cvaa mountain rifle I think it was. :results: :what:  :front:

You know what they say.......... "There is a Darwin Award Candidate born every day"......

:shake:

You are going to get more pressure with the 4F. It may leave less fouling. In a short barrel or smaller bore it may have some value. The big question is why anyone would use 4F? What was he trying to accomplish?

The only guns I have that use ffffg as the main charge are
my NAA Mini .22 revolvers. I guess you could get away with it in a short barreled .32 rifle, but I don't think you would gain much by it. In bigger bores you would get a pressure spike and and a rapid burn, neither of which is particularly desirable.

Ill dig out his add , it was for RBs only, really putting on the range and speed for hunting, claimed big deer not like these small Tx deer at 200 plus yds. When I called him he was a real nice guy, and he was adament(?) weight in grs and a max load just wondering if anyone had tryed his loads oh ya theb patching HAD to be a mix like 50/50 blend of cotton and ? :front:

Hmmmm...now let me get this straight...large deer, shooting over 200 yards, and using ffffg for the main charge.

Many of the mentally challenged are very nice people.

WOW.. I've never heard of using 4f as a main charge. I personally would not do such a thing. Also as far as mixing powder types, I believe at most powder manufacturer's sights it warns people not to mix powders.

I bought two pounds (due to a misunderstanding among friends) of 4f for priming the pan of my flintlocks. Now that I have it I think I have all the prime I might need for many years... I still would not use it as a main charge.

I'm not trying to be skeptical, but 200+ yards is (to me) stretching it a bit. Is this with a scope? An inline? I think 4f is dangerously close to a tragedy as the main charge, especially with hunting loads.
Think I'll be on the other side of the mountain when he fires 120 gr of 4f in any rifle

Yea, and then he fired that extra 40 yd shot first instead of using it for a longer shot. Still one of my favorite flicks though.

ya he used a scope on all shots, and i think it is cotton and rayon or something patches, and the charges are by wt not vol you had to use regular loading scales and the 50s top charge wasnt real big (im going to guess since i cant get up and finde his book that it was less than 60 grs vol) my kid found a mag story about this for me just now...RIFLE NOV/DEC 1998 and I talked to him a while a year ago but he wasnt feeling well at the time, he wassnt kidding,it was on pages 18/19 my 18 is torn out the story goes a max of 71 grs ,killing hits on deer at 250 yards ,"the RB is quite sufficient for deer size game" holds 6"low at 100 right on at150, on the spine at 200, ect.He really sounded like he put a few years into this and did it all the time hunting, not crazed sounding at all. I was just wondering if anyone else had tryed his method out I was/am chicken I guess. I had one junk rifle I tryed just 25 grs (and standing way away from it) the gun didnt blow and that 495 ball was hauling! well it gives us something to kick over I guess. :results: :front:

You might be on the other side of the mountain, but if he shoots that load ............... he'll be there with you ,; as well as all over the valley, the flat lands, across the creek, and just about anywhere the wind blows his remains. :imo: :front:
Soggy

Next thing ya know he'll be claiming that its' 'ok' to shoot smokeless....heck....why not convince him to shoot smokeless just for sh*ts and giggles?

Oh I know why, the barrel says "Blackpowder Only", if that's the case, cover that with duct tape, then convince him to shoot smokeless.

One less dumbo in the world isn't such a bad thing!

Proof that Darwin was right...

:nono:

folks instead of halling the fella through the hawthorns how about we exsplain why ?.

I myself have never used 4F as a main charge for a few reasons.
A BP charge does not increase evenly so say if you had a charge of 3F giving our 13000PSI
2X that will not give you 26000, in fact it could be way more. these numbers are just that , I don

Can I send him the name and address of my insurance agent? If he continues with this he (no his family) is going to need this.

Well, I don't know. Used to be that everyone was quite certain that 3f was dangerous in anything over .40 cal. Now it seems like 3f is about as popular as 2f in .50 and .54.
I'd want to see some pressure tested data, I wouldn't be too quick to put down something I've never seen.
As for 200+ yards with roundball, I don't care what kind of scope and rangfinder he uses that is ridicules! If you start a .495" ball at 2300fps, a 5 mph crosswind will drift the ball 18" at 200 yards and over 29" at 250. That's not much wind but still a lot of guess work.
play with gongs at long range but game deserves better. :bull:

I agree that small charges of 4F would work fine...ie: squirrels, etc...

But...I wouldn't want to use it even for squirrels as it would dribble out of the touch hole.

Plus, being unglazed, it would be affected by humidity like it does in the pan, yet I wouldn't be able to simply refresh it like I occasionally refresh 4F in the pan.

I guess it would stay sealed enough inside one of those modern new-fangled cap guns
