Friends, our 2nd Amendment rights are always under attack and the NRA has been a constant for decades in helping fight that fight.
We have partnered with the NRA to offer you a discount on membership and Muzzleloading Forum gets a small percentage too of each membership, so you are supporting both the NRA and us.
If you want to see one of these rifles in action, check out the latest post in the Hunting Forum - 59 Yard Head Shot Squirrel. Nice video showing a squirrel hunt using a .32 Frontier flintlock.
Well the patent breech tends to be more of a concern the smaller the caliber. If one isn't used to a patent breech, that's a quirk. The .54 seems to be the least prone to problems with the PB. (You may need to invest in a .22 caliber brush.)
Mine in .50 had some very sharp edges on the lands, and it took me about three months to figure that out. The .50 is a 1:48 twist, and I got it for a moose hunt in Canada, so was using conicals instead of patched, round ball. Sharp lands and a conical are good, and it shot great. It was later in the year when it wasn't shooting round ball worth a darn that I found it cutting parches..., six nice, uniform, tiny holes per patch. So I polished the barrel with pieces of an abrasive pad, and voila, she shot well after that.
Pedersoli secures it's lock on the Frontier model with a single lock screw, AND a small wood screw in front of the bend of the frizzen spring. You have to remember this when cleaning AND take care not to over tighten this screw and thus strip out the wood.
So them's the quirks...,
OH and I'm probably going to get another in .54 as they are on sale...hope I don't miss it...
Thank you for answering my question about the quirks. I know all about the sharp rifling in those barrels. I have tried to polish it with Scotch pad but haven't gotten it smoothed all the way out yet. Still cutting patches. I look forward to the day when it doesn't! I would have thought that shooting conicals out of your rifle would have cleaned those up for you. I haven't tried shooting my Maxi Balls out of it. Might have to give that a try! Greg
Naw, I got the rifle, fired ten rounds from it, at various ranges, and got good groups. Two weeks later left for Canada, it was last week of August. Didn't get a moose. Came back, no reason to check the sights upon return. Checked them in October, for early deer, OOPS.
IF you haven't smoothed it out with a scotch pad yet, You may want to go to lapping compound.
Yep, right now they are listed for 549 plus 5.00 shipping. That would seem a heck of a deal for someone wanting to put their toe in the flintlock waters!!
