Ipicked up a Hawkens 50 at an antique store a few months back the only marking on the gun are Sharon rifle barrel lock trigger guard and butt plate are all chrome no markings on the lock in or out. if I could figure out how to post pictures I would, computer stupid. what can you tell me about a Sharon Hawkens.so glad I found your forum this place is awesome proud to be a member

AFAIK, there were no "Sharon" frontstuffers; but, Sharon is/was a custom barrel maker, so you most likely have a custom-barreled whatever, in a "Hawken" pattern/style rifle.

To post pics, you should register @ a (free) pic-hosting website (like photobucket or imageshack), upload your properly-sized pics there, then copy each pic's direct url, to paste it in your post.

When all else fails, read our sticky's: http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/255033/

Hal Sharon got into the muzzle loading business in the late 1970's in Kalispell, MT. He offered half stock Hawkens, finished and in kit form. He also had full stock Hawken, English Fowler and Trade Gun kits. The Sharon Rifle Barrel Company was noted for it's very accurate barrels and these were used in his kits. I have a .50 cal Sharon half stock Hawken I won't part with. Hang on to yours, a lucky find! Do a search on this forum for more info.

Sharon made Hawken kits back in the mid-1970s.
Chrome plated parts?
Makes one wonder but I gave up trying to figure out why people did some things long ago.

A picture might help us determine whether it's a complete Sharon kit or that a Sharon barrel was used on some other's parts collection.

If you have a Sharon barrel on that gun never part with it!. I have heard too many good stories about their barrels. One of these days I'll luck up and find one for sale, then my Credit Card better look out!!.

OK Sonny,

The mid-70s was not SO long ago for a lot of us. I was 30+ years old, married, and had been working for 10+ years. :blah:

Are you positive it's "chromed", or could it possibly be "stainless".

There is a builder (name escapes me at the moment or I would give credit) that builds with stainless parts that came standard on Lyman's stainless models.

Polished up, it may tend to appear as chrome. Just suggesting you could have a rifle that was put together with a very decent barrel and some more current parts.

Sounds either polished, "in the white" or bare steel or someone chrome plated it. Was looking through one of my old J. B. Woods gun care books the other day and he mentioned coming across a very nice but completely chromed Luger. People do whatever strikes their fancy. Hope this one is just a high polish or even an unfinished kit.

Did Sharon use 12L14 for barrels, or REAL gun barrel steel?

Who cares?? Sharon made a very good gun barrel. So does Rice, and Colerain. 12L14 makes a very good muzzleloader barrel.

Hall Sharon made his barrels out of 12L14.

Barrels smaller than 50 cal were button rifled with .005" groves, 50 cal and above were cut rifled.

(but maybe the facts are in error - since there are many that believe 12L14 is no good for muzzle loading barrels and will easily fail the only explanation for all these 40 to 50 year old barrels still being functional is they were never fired)

And yes, Rice, Colerain and Getz all use 12L14 - maybe someday they will use "real" barrel steel since their current offerings blow up all the time NOT...

Maybe polished stainless but looks chrome I heard Sharon made Hawken back in the 70's paid 150.00 a couple months back, I'll see if I can figure out how to post pics stay tuned

the lock butt plate and trigger guard look the same as this lock,I will figure out how to post pic when one of my kids come home to help me I'm dumber than a rock when it come to computers .that is the exact same lock on galambs post

I have a rifle with silver hardware. I guess some might think it's chrome. But it looks more like old silver ware, with a slight tarnish.
