50 cal pistol

i have been thinking of making my own 50 call pistol for deer hunting i need to know what twist to use on like a 15 inch barrel i what too shot roundball can anyone help i have a sabot barrel its 1/28 twist i was going to cut in down but i want to know about the twist?

Lyman's Great Plains Pistol has a 1:30 twist for roundball. Your barrel might work just fine.

I shoot a Wm Parker by traditions, it has a 1 in 20 barrel.
my 10 shot aggregate scores out to 35 yards are consistantly in the low to mid 90's.
not to brag, but the folks with slower twist barrels cannot keep up, nor can I get their guns to shoot as well as mine.
I also have a trapper, as do a few friends. they too have 1 in 20 barrels and shoot rather well!
I'm sure that the double set triggers probably play a small part in the total equation!

Ahh, the Trapper. One of the best bargins out there. Yes the double set trigger makes for some good shooting. It can be a hand-full with full power loads, but what handgun isn't. Mine shoots as well as I could ever ask for.

A 15" barrel? Wow! That oughtta be something. I got mine from Riley Smith at Long Hammock barrels, but it's only 12". I know he used a fast twist so I wouldnt break my wrist with a slow one. What you have might work ok. What type of pistol were you thinking of building? :grin:

Most pistol barrels have a pretty fast twist.
Not much length to stabilize the RB I guess.
A 15" pistol is going to be muzzle heavy if it is left Octagonal.
You might want to have it cut into a Oct/Rd, with a tapered round, getting thinner as it fades to the muzzle :grin: .
Also, are you buying the barrel custom made?
Most pistol barrels that I know of are 12"max.
It would make an interesting pistol.

A 1/28 will work.
What are you thinking about...a flintlock or percussion..
The reason I ask is you will need to modify the breech plug.

you never know what it will do untill you try it. i have a cva kentucky (.45 cal) that shoots a 255 grain handgun bullet very well! all that with a 1 in 66 twist!

percussion i have a gm barrel i bought a tc hawkens from a guy for $70 in had a gm lrh barrel on it iam thinking that i will cut in down i have a friends that is a gunsmith i work with wood so iam going to work the stock down and make a pistol out of it leave some of the but stock and make it rounded i want the barrel longer so it should shot better any input would be great thanks
