I wonder if anyone makes a 54 cal. flinter barrel that will drop into a 15/16" barrel channel
I would like to keep the overall weight down on the rifle
I see the lyman trade flinter is 15/16 but will it fit the t/c stock set-up???

Green Mountain makes .54 IBS barrels in 15/16" and 1" for TC Hawkens. The original TC .54s I have seen are 1" across the flats rather than 15/16", so check first. If you are replacing a .50 TC barrel with a .54, you will probably need a 15/16". Link to TOW below although you can get them from other sources and direct from GM. Sometimes they have the flint barrels, sometimes not. (I didn't notice any .54 flint barrels listed, but you can call them and check.)

Agree...GM does makes the .54cal TC drop-in rifled barrel in 15/16"...they simply happen to be out of stock right now.
Last week GM told me they had just initiated the build process for another run of them but it would be spring before they're ready.

They do have some .54cal x 15/16" caplock smoothbore barrels in stock, and if your deer hunting is limited to typical woods where shots are 40-60 yards, you won't be disappointed.
Mine is as accurate as a rifle to 50yds and probably a good deal further, I just haven't tried it past 50yds yet.

Then you have a lot of versatility with shot loads for small game, clay targets, etc...I think the smoothbore barrels are on sale right now for $100...give Kerry Smith a call at GM if you're interested...

No, the special run of 50 is planned all caplocks.

I just called / got off the phone with Kerry Smith and asked a few questions...and while she was very nice and went to lengths to explain why in each case, the answers basically still came down to no.
1) Can you alter the manufacturing plan of 50 caplocks to 40 caplocks and 10 flintlocks for example?
“No...our manufacturing processes are fairly rigid and we can’t modify orders just any way we want like that.”

2) Can we contact you in the spring when the caplock barrels are ready and pay you a conversion fee to change them to flint?
“No...we normally don’t have spare Flint plugs on hand or even do that as a regular service”¦we did yours because we had a few Flint plugs left on hand and charged you an extra fee, but it’s not something we keep plugs on hand for, or plan our manpower staffing levels for...BUT...check back in the spring and maybe our workload will have fallen off to the point where we might be able to do some if we can find some extra plugs...but to be honest, I doubt we’ll have time.”

3) Do you have any plans to do a special run of flint barrels like you doing for the caplock barrels?
“No, besides you and maybe one or two others, we don’t have any calls for Flint versions of drop in barrels for the T/C Hawken.”

4) What if the special run of caplocks comes out in the spring, and somebody wants a Flint version bad enough to by a Flint plug from you, then pay a gunsmith to replace the plugs”¦could you/would you sell a Flint plug?
She went and checked, came back and said “yes, they’d sell a Flint plug if they had one, but it would then void the warranty on that S/N barrel if it was swapped by someone other than GM...also said since we rarely make Flint barrels, we don’t normally have plugs on hand.”

5) What about if you got requests committing to buy a Flint version if you’ll make them?
“Well, if I can get 30-35 requests for a Flint version I can take it upstairs and they’ll probably agree to make a run...minimum manufacturing run is 50 barrels, and they wouldn’t want too many left over to just lay around in inventory...we just don’t get Flint requests anymore to speak of...but go ahead and post my Email: [email protected] if anybody wants to request one and I’ll start saving the Emails.”

Bill: thank you for the update on the GM barrels
I will e mail them for a start I sure would like to have a 54 cal. barrel for my t/c 15/16 stock channel.
I wonder if the Lyman trade barrel in 54 cal. 15/16" flint will fit the t/c stock
I know the Lyman twist are 1 in 48 but you know and i know it still will shoot RB's and patch

I like the lean look on my t/c flinter it use to be a hawkens at one time when it was made in the middle 70's

There are other possibilities to achieve your goal:

1) Buy one of the existing 15/16" caplock smoothbore barrels on sale for $100...send it to Ed Rayl in Gassaway, West VA to add rifling ($65) and make/install a Flint plug on it ($$ ?) when he puts it back together...you could blue the new breechplug easily with a tube of Birchwood Casey PermaBlue paste;

2) Or, send your existing barrel to Ed Rayl and have him copy the dimensions to make a duplicate barrel in Flint, but it would be in the white and then you'd have to get it all blued.

3) Check with Ed Cain, www.cainsoutdoor.com , to see if he has one in stock, and/or can use his contacts to locates one for you;

4) Check with the Tip Curtis Frontier Shop in Tennessee.

I would really like to buy a 15/16" .54 GM flint barrel as well but it seems like it's impossible to find even a barrel blank.

So; what other barrel makers could fit a 15/16" TC barrel channel? Is Mark DeHass still in Business? Are there other barrel makers out there that can do it?

I want a 15/16" .54 barrel to fit a TC stock but I need it done by Christmas. I would like to go with a GM barrel but they just don't seem to want my business. Any idea who would?

Another question. Can things like barrel under ribs, breech plugs and such be ordered from TC or do they just repair their rifles.

I will email them with my request for one.Hopefully we can get enough response and geta run made. When I saw yoyr post originally I was estatic thinking they were doing the flint version again..LOL.From a high to a low back up a little, thanks Roundball for your leg work...Ray

I've posted a few thoughts just above on possible alternatives...maybe you can get some ideas from that...

You know...a thought just occurred to me...wonder how big an operation Ed Rayl has...ie: wonder if he could handle an order for several barrels like we're talking about...15/16" x 32" x 1:70" drop-in Flint barrels for the T/C Hawken.

Could send him one for him to make all his precise measurements, then he could send it right back...I might give him a call and just ask.

I'm also interested in a barrel like the one being discussed. I'll probably send an email to the GM address. The Ed Rayl idea sounds good too.

I was wondering if Track of the Wolf could be persuaded to purchase a lot of 50 barrels or list such a barrel on their GM barrel page. They list accepting orders for other barrels that they don't have in stock. The problem with Green Mountain is that not many people know about contacting the company directly. Hundreds of people probably look at barrels on the Track site.

Does anyone have a relationship with the owner or manager of Track?

Lot of great ideas.Only thing I know for sure is I want a .54 in flint! First choice is a Green Mt. But the conversion Roundball brought up sounds like it might be another alternative..Ray

I am going to call Track of the Wolf to see what they say; but I would like to see how many post on this thread that they have an interest in this. So; I will wait a couple of days to get an idea of if there is enough that want one. Now is the time to do it because the tooling will be set up for the percussion run. It may be the last chance to get it done. I have also posted on the HuntingPA.com website about this and there is some limited interest. PA has a special flintlock season so if there is enough people to commit to this then some will certainly come from Pennsylvania.

If anyone would be interested in getting one of these barrels please post your interest in this thread so we can get an idea on if this is something we can accomplish. I really believe there is more interest in this that GM thinks there is.

Special thanks to Roundball for taking his time to follow up on this and get the ball rolling if you will.

I emailed Kerry to put my name on the list for a 15/16" .54 flint barrel and she said she would. When she has enough names, she will take it to her manager who will make the decision.
