Funny how 40 yrs ago we used 100+ grains all the time it seemed and now I am using 85 grains BP FFG in my lyman GPR PRB. I have used 120 gr. in past in this rifle and Lyman says it is ok. I don't think it is that accurate using over 105 gr. in my rifle and recoil is nicer at 85 gr. too. Seems to group best at this level of BP using 85 as well and that is why I use it number one is accuracy. Your rifle may be different.

Have a 54 renegade dedicated to shooting Lyman cast maxi's only. If your interested in reading on OP.

90 Gr's of 2-FFG Groex or Pyrodex RS seems to get Lyman's 54 maxi on target at 100 yards and it also showing a reasonable grouping. But I purposely use a T/C 54 cal felt button wad under its Maxi also which seems to help in the accuracy department by tightening its grouping some.
Lots of powder with a heavy bullet you are assured of a pretty hefty recoil Sir. Haven't shot a deer with this rifle and it's loading yet. Have other rifles to use for that purpose. But if I were to hunt B/P elk. This would be my primary rifle for that purpose. No doubt about it.

Thank you so much. I know I don't really need a heavy 54 cal conical for deer, but I just couldn't resist buying this rifle. I wanted a 50 cal conical shooter, and this was more of the same, and only $250 with all the accouterments. I'm really hoping to find a very accurate load that will take deer as well as larger game. Deer are the staple animal, but there is the possibility of a western elk hunt some time, and a moose hunt I'm still dreaming of.

I have the same rifle and use 90 gr. black with a 360 real. Smashes deer real good.I cast my own.
