Glad to see you back with a finished Lancaster! My .54 has a Green Mountain barrel, and appreciates a .015 patch around a .535 roundball, pushed by 80 grains of FFFg Goex.

Good luck working up a successful load, and good luck in those Wayne Co. woods. :hatsoff:

I have a c wt. 38in. Rice .54 that likes 90grs. 3F drill cloth patch using Hoppes#9 with a .530 Hornady or cast round ball at the range and Wonder Lube for hunting. It's what works for me. Dan.

if you haven't already done so, I would recommend you check out Dutch Schoultz' method. Here's a link: http://www.blackpowderrifleaccuracy.com/
most of his work focuses on percussion, but you can still gain a lot from the method if you shoot flint.

good luck in your quest for tiny groups :)

I approach it a bit dif. Collerain round groove 42".
.527 ball and .018 pillow ticking.
65-110 grains 2F depending upon distance but 90 grains is the go to.

I saw no difference in accuracy using a .530 just harder loading.

Cast my own .527 but .526 is available from TOTW and I've shot that just fine same stuff as above.

Yep I agree with you 100% on the 90 grain FFG load.
That is EXACTLY what both my Thompson cap, AND my
.54 Lyman Plains Flint rifle like.
Funny but 80, and 100 throw lead around! That big hunk of Lead has great knockdown power. I prefer it to my 50's for Hunting, Hands down.
It takes learning a bit of height adjustment on long shots, but if you are good at guessing distance, or have a Golf Range finder, life is good. I think this is why many prefer .50's.
Good Thread.

Until you reveal just what the load is intended for, we can only guess....a hunting load and for what game, a target load or just some casual off hand shooting? I have some suggestions for all of the above, but I'd be just guessing and wasting my time until the "purpose" of the load is stated....Good luck on finishing up the LR......Fred

mainly hunting deer and bear here in northeast PA, with max yardage where I do most of my hunting might get out to 100yds....my choice of powder is goex FFF....

I've used a .54 Hawken that I built for elk hunting in CO and the load is .535 RB, .018 patch and 120 grs 3f. The bbl twist is 1:66 and this load is very accurate.

The last elk shot w/ this rifle was at 107 paces and went 40 yds after the shot. My paces are that of a 6'-2" man.

Many have asked why such a "big load"? It's not because of the killing power, it's because of the distances encountered in CO. The other reason is the low mid-range height....some of the other elk shot w/ this rifle were somewhere around mid-range and the same hold was used, which in the heat of battle, is important.

The recoil, anyways to me, is moderate, but some might find it causes flinching. My son who now has the rifle has no problem w/ the recoil and has shot deer and elk w/ it.....Fred

My school-of-thought is that the load should be "the load". My target shooting is practice for my deer hunting, and I shoot the same load for rabbit though I take a head shot for if I take a rabbit it's because I've been unsuccessful going for deer, and it's time to go home and a bunny has presented itself. I can't unload and reload with a lighter charge, and I don't think they did back-in-the-day, so for me one charge fits all.

If I'm going for bunny and squirrel, I take the much smaller squirrel rifle, and use "the load" for that.

yeah my loads are always what I would use hunting, I never under loaded for target practice....

Probably about as long as since I was on here.

My Colerain likes 60 gr Goex fff with a .535 ball and .018 ticking for target work. More serious applications and I kick it up to 90. Good out to 200 yards in our silhouette matches.

Really? I've been on this forum for 11 years? Sheesh, that's a lot of water under the bridge.
