Gang, I am considering my first flint deer rifle project and thinking of a 54 Cal with 1792 Contract rifle lines / components. :surrender: Yes, I understand the the originals were .49s but I would prefer a .54 in case I get the chance to carry it west for Elk.
I am leaning towards a finished barrel length in the 37-38.5" range. Is there anyone that makes a 15/16ths octagon round bottom or radius rifled barrel with a twist faster than 1 in 70? I would like to try to hunt with a small for caliber minie. If not I will settle for a BRB rig.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

There is the Colerain 15/16, cut rifled radius grooved, 42" Barrel, .54 with 1:56 twist

You can get an octagonal, 42", Colerain .54, Swamped Barrel with 1:56 twist.

You mentioned 1792 Contract Rifle "lines and components" so I can't tell how close you want to come, and you can get Colerain barrels straight sided in 36" or swamped in 38" or 37" lengths..., all 1:56 twist.

You might want to take a look at the Lewis and Clark rifle offered by Don Stith. While his kit version of offered in 49 caliber, you should be able to get that barrel in 54 caliber from Ed Rayl. Some researchers believe that 1792 contract rifle were refurbished and bored out to 54 caliber.

A round ball is adequate for elk at muzzle loading distances up to about 100 yards.

I second bobby he just made me one .54 cal 15/16 with 1/60 twist. Good work for sure. Deff will order anothe rbarrel by him. Very accomodating!!
